First Mega-star To Come To Mls In His "prime" & Team

Henry Nguyen is the Managing Partner and Peter Guber is the Executive Chairman. People like Magic Johnson are just the face of the franchise, like he is with the Dodgers.

There won't be a player that everyone agrees upon to open the wallets for, but they're sharing the costs which is easier for them.
Yeah Gruber and Nguyen have resources are mainly in charge. Penn is the president but he's proven to be a a figurehead, knows nothing about soccer or MLS in particular. I expect to be gone faster than Pennetti.

I could totally see Neymar coming here after 2018. Imagine the fanfare. Not calling it. Just saying that there is that element of being the new and improved Pele.

Plus, his Barca boys will be headed here then anyway. Not predicting it, but Neymar to Orlando In 2018-19-20 ish is pretty interesting and logical.

If "The Soccer DON" decides to increase the salary cap, TAM/AM, etc. then I could surely imagine an in-prime, world-class player coming to the MLS. But we can't get crazy with the likes of Neymar and Ronaldo. You have to look at it in a business perspective. The MLS is a growing market but it's nowhere near generating the amount of fans and money that the top European leagues have. It would be a terrible, terrible investment for any team to buy a superstar because it would take you FOREVER to make a profit on the player, if at all.

Solid point. I'd be happy, maybe even ecstatic, with a couple more Giovincos (for the league) over the next 2-3 years.

If for no other reason than name recognition, would Balotelli fill the criteria as a mega-star?

There's a damn good chance he's playing somewhere in MLS soon.......

This whole thread begs the question of who has been the biggest signing to date? Specifically I mean this in terms of pure ranking among players of his time. When Giovinco signed what would his world rank have been? Beckham? Henry?

Who was the biggest and what was his rank at time of signing? From there the question before getting to Midas Mulligan 's is who will next break that record for the MLS?

It could be a MC to NYC type situation where a mega star still towards the tail-end of his prime comes here earlier than one would expect due to some unique circumstances, such as a new blood signing at the position or development of a budding superstar making the older star suddenly expendable, a wife who loves NYC, and/or a too good to turn down offer by the owners to promote the brand here.

I want to respond to this in-depth, so I'm waiting for a workday.

I figure it has to be Gio. Either of them.

Looking forward to your analysis. And I promise not to share this with your employer. (Nor with the clients you are billing for this time.)

I love this question.

What constitutes a mega star? Is Iniesta one of the 10 best players in the world? Is he a "mega-star?"

You could argue from a marketing perspective that Villa, Pirlo, Lampard and Gerrard are all more important than Iniesta. Conversely, Giovinco was less heralded and is the best of the bunch.

Would you rather have Wayne Rooney or Memphis?

I'm also of the opinion that the first in-prime mega star likely won't be such a mega star until after they debut in MLS. If you're talking about players on the icon-level of Messi/Ronado/Neymar/Bale, then I don't see it happening for a long time. It would take a crazy kind of idiot (or more so their agent) to want to play here over other top flight leagues like those. Although I did snag Hazard and Reus on FIFA career mode : P

I think the best we'll see for a while are the in-prime Giovincos and older DPs that are past-prime. They'd have to basically be about 20 or younger right now and already a superstar to qualify, and Harry Kane is never gonna leave EPL.

Funny you say that because I've wondered why this hasn't already happened.

As much of a headache as he can be, imagine giving Pirlo an Italian speaking buddy and signing Balotelli to a one year flyer? I think it would either yield amazing results or be a total train wreck.
