Friday offtopic, Forum Features edition

That was before my time, and worth the quick read, but I had to stop around page 5 as it really started to jump the tracks....

He had a crazy obsession with alternate logos.... I pity his wife when they have kids- he's liable to toss out alternate names for years....
The guy was something else. Obsessed with image attachments. Couldn't make a post without multiple attachments. And he'd always have bold text and headlines in his post. One day I just came to the conclusion that he was trolling and banned him.

This seems to be a good place to set up my soap box, but I think there are too many forums. Most of the forums hardly get used or only have a handful of people actually posting and checking them. I think there are alot of forums that don't need to exist or could be merged together. I think a streamline forum would generate more discussion.

For example, Team News & Rumors should be combined with Supporters Discussion. NYCFC Roster should be a sub-forum inside that merged forum. I don't really know if we need an event and meetup or supporter's faction section separate from Team News & Rumors/Supporters Discussion. MLS and Other Football should be merged together and put higher up (maybe under the Team News & Rumor/Supporter Discussion Forum. Other Sports can be merged with Offtopic.

This is something that has been discussed by Dan and myself on a few different occasions. I did trim a little bit of the fat a couple of weeks back, but in a few places so I'll discuss it with him again. No promises on what will come out on it at this stage - we'll get back to you.

As I do argee with you that there are a lot of threads that are being mostly unused I do disagree that we need to combine most of them together. Personally I like that there is more diversification within the topics for the thread. It makes it so there is more distinct topics and less clicking if you put them together inside one another. TBH it's not that big of a deal to me because I use the recent post button these days

We have discussed merging forums but it has to make sense. I don't think merging official club releases/rumors with supporter related discussion makes sense.
We probably have one of the smallest forums of ones I've been on and have consolidated a lot over the years.
There has to be a level of organization. News/rumors and Supporter Discussion are the busiest sections and each serve a distinct purpose. Do you really want to go to team news to discuss who we signed and dig through 'Yankee stadium food/city beats' discussions to find it? We also need to have a home for our supporter groups. Whether they use it is irrelevant but to take it away wouldn't be right.
I think Intro/Offtopic/sports can and should be merged and Events/Meetups moved as a sub forum under supporter discussion but that's where I stop.
We're an MLS forum and should have an MLS section. To merge it with Other Football makes us look like Euro snobs with an MLS club. plus both sections account for close to 10% of activity so they serve a purpose.
15 sections on a 170,000 post forum isn't a lot.

In no way trying to fire back at you and certainly not offended by your suggestions. Simply giving my reasoning for why things are the way they are. And for those who have been here over the years we have changed a lot over time and often without suggestion, simply on our own terms. As Falastur mentioned we have discussed it extensively in the past and will be making some moves soon.

I hear you, but just keep in mind that 150k of those posts are in just 3 forums with the other parts of the forum not really getting alot of attention.

I think the minimal solution is the most elegant one. Something just bothers me aesthetically about having a whole bunch of forums that very few people actually use.

Consolidating the other forums would be a good idea especially if people arent posting enough to justify an individual forum. I wouldnt have a category or forum just have it. You can always create something if the people start posting alot on a certain thing.

Just my 2 cents and not an attack on you.

Would be a neat feature but people are very sensitive. Someone that keeps getting negative feedback is likely to take it personally and start conflict. Good suggestion, can look at other posibilities.
ALBNYfan I'll see if that a possibility.
If you have an iPhone doubletab the top of your screen and it'll jump you to the top of the page.

I think a "disagree" button would work and probably not upset people (it's not a "dislike" button). Also a "funny". You don't want more than 3-4 because then it gets unwieldy and ridiculous.

I also think there are too many forums. One has to flip through many of them in order to really get a sense of the boards.

There are several downsides to multiple forums. The biggest is that people don't go into every forum, so often there are discussions that people miss or that don't get the attention that they deserve. Another is that it's often hard to find a thread because some threads could reasonably go into more than one place.

I tend to think that you only need to divide forums into separate topics if a forum is getting so many new threads that they cycle down to page 2 while people are still actively commenting. The fora that are getting the least attention are probably good candidates to combine.

I also think some fora - like Matchday - would work better as repositories for threads that are past their relevance. You could pin the official game threads at the top of the Team News section and then move to the game forum once the game is over. I bet they would get more attention that way - they'd certainly be easier to find.

Anyway, this is all constructive advice. I love the boards, and appreciate all the time you put in.

Just thought of this while trying to find something in the stadium thread. (Insert needle in a haystack joke here).

How about a feature that lets you scroll through ONLY photos/gifs posted in a thread? Sometimes you're looking for something but don't have a keyword, and it's very easy to scroll through photos to jog your memory. Then you click on the photo and it takes you to its original post.

Happy New Year NYCFC_Dan !!! I know you love this thread :)
