No need to rehash how Lamps' ACTIONS bothered many, but how about one of our guys (assume a current or future DP coming from a bigger and better league) making similar statements to Gerrard's? Let's assume we are not taking Gerrard's quotes out of context (which is possible), they would bother me if I were an LA fan, and would bother me if an NYCFC player made similar statements. Nothing worse than your new colleague talking about how much they miss all the great things about their old company, or (this never happened to me but) a new girlfriend singing the praises of a former flame. We get it, the EPL is great, has a long, well-developed history, with die-hard fans, and you were a legend, but we don't need to hear about how much you miss that and how you wish you could turn back the clock. In effect, he is saying he has "settled" for this fresh opportunity to have some fun, avoid boredom, and collect a pay check, but already misses the good ol' days playing for a big team in a big league. This feeds right into the "retirement league" sentiment, that MLS needs to move past.

It doesn't faze me. If you want to avoid these types of interviews then you have to start signing younger guys like Giovinco. Gerrard also says he wishes he were 25 and had the next 10 years ahead of himself again. It's typical old man talk, and in soccer terms he is old. He also acknowledges he had his time, so he's moved on. Plus he's promoting a book. The natural market for it are Liverpool fans. What's he going to say: I moved on and pretty much don't care about Liverpool any more? That won't move inventory.
Lampard did say similar stuff in July when he went to that Chelsea event at the Football Factory.

I was pissed because his delay in starting for us was going into extended time, but if he showed up as scheduled and did the same event and said the same things I would have though t it innocuous.

he was in Liverpool and was a rock star. Now hes in LA and can walk in someplace and nobody knows him because hes not an actor. I would bet that Villa and Pirlo get noticed every block they walk in NYC

Maybe I'm being overly sensitive because I have now become an avid defender of all things MLS, but I think it was his choice of using "miss" to describe his feelings. It's been merely a few months and he's "missing" the good 'old days, feeling homesick for the bigger stage and legendary status. "Cherishing", "loving", "remembering" all have a different implication than "missing" it. That was just my instant reaction while reading, and likely how I would feel if I heard Villa talking about missing better European soccer, trophies, bigger crowds, etc.

I think it's a fair point you make but I also doubt Gerrard put as much thought into his specific word choice as you and I just have.

This board would be melting down if Lamps had made those comments

First off, nobody walks in LA. Let's get THAT out of the way.

I was bothered by his comments, as the resident Galaxy supporter on the forum.
I chose not to make a huge deal out of it because of the venue, but since it was brought up...

To this point, Gerrard has been a pretty smart cookie in Los Angeles.
I mentioned a few weeks ago he's kept his head down, grinded up and down the field and kept his mouth shut.
UNTIL NOW.
The problem is nobody in LA has probably even noticed.
The whole attitude out there is so laissez faire that most probably yawned IF they read them.
While I'm a Galaxy supporter, I'm from Brooklyn; so I was kinda incensed by them.
I likened them to the comments Lampard made to Chelsea supporters a while back this summer.
Traitorous.

One major difference?
Galaxy is winning; City is not.
THAT doesn't go unnoticed in Los Angeles.

If I supported the Galaxy- not to mentioned involved In the MLS - I'd be really unhappy with his comments.
He'd no need to go that In depth.
He's been under media scrutiny long enough to be adept at wording his answers so they don't offend.

He has stated multiple times how the league has surprised him, the competition is high, the young players listen, etc. I actually don't take this as much. His circumstances are unique. He was captain of his boyhood club. He was with Liverpool since his early tween years. He was high profile, high emotion and was an absolute god to Liverpool fans. This isn't just a veteran player coming to America, this is a player who breathed, and bled for one club his entire life. I wouldn't expect him to drop those memories or pretend they didn't mean everything to him. He can enjoy MLS and miss Liverpool at the same time. These are not mutually exclusive things.

Also, we want our athletes to be honest, and when they are we try to use their words against them. He is human, he's expressing human emotions, let him.

...and, to be fair, the Daily Mail is promoting a serialization of his book, written before he got here.

My reaction was a visceral one; I admit it.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm a Gerrard defender, but knowing how I still haven't sorted out my feelings regarding Gerrard in MLS I'm sure his feelings are also twisted. That's his home, his life. Always will be.

Believe me. dude; this was the only negative feeling I've had about Gerrard. He's been, as you noted, very positive about his experience with Galaxy and he's certainly enjoying the SoCal lifestyle, something I wholly understand.

He's been a professional, a high compliment coming from me.

Galaxy is an interesting club to watch, much more the true successor to the original NASL Cosmos. as opposed to the one currently carrying the name. I will admit, though, the current Cosmos iteration is following the formula without the impact. That could change if Cosmos gets their stadium plans off the ground before City does.

You have to think these guys are coached as to how to respond to the media. I look at this articles and it feels real. When I look at DP's from all over the league basically saying, "MLS is realy great! All my friends overseas really want to play here!", as media coaching. Sure, the fans like it, and its helps the league in the long run, but how genuine are these guys really?

I couldn't agree more.
English tabloids don't really have any competition in the US.
New York's come the closest.
Los Angeles has nothing in the realm, unless you include TMZ.
