MLS and Apple Broadcasting Deal

Apple debuted a new scorebug for baseball this year. It's decidedly different from the blocky basic scorebug they use for soccer. I appreciate that the soccer one tries to convey the minimal necessary info with as little distraction as possible. But it also looks like it was designed in Microsoft Word. I'd appreciate a bit more visual interest to the presentation.

It's year 3. Enough excuses. Every broadcast looks exactly the same -- and that's by design. Which means their process is to stay on the field and show the players. They almost never show the coaches in those scenarios.

It's not going to improve, and as they continue to lose money and as they continue to realize no one is watching, they will continue to cut costs and worsen the broadcasts. It won't get better, it will only get worse.

I know Apple has nothing to do with the production, but it's on their air. They're responsible even if they're not to blame.

apple is losing lots of money with their streaming service and has been losing money since they started it.

It will be interesting how things go after messi & company are gone. it's very likely a large percentage of subs will go with them. Getting fans connected to players and teams. the stories and bonds that form based on them, are what turn a casual fan into a super fan.

MLS needs a story coordinator or team whose sole job is to come up with storylines between teams, about players or coaches, and ensure these stories are told during game broadcasts, their 360 show, on the website, etc. in a way that will engage and suck audiences in. Kind of a bad comparison, but MLS needs to WWE itself.

The NFL can be monotonous in its broadcast because everyone will watch any NFL game. MLS is all about its club and the local followings, people aren’t tuning in en mass to watch a random MLS game.

NFL broadcasts cover much better storylines than MLS broadcasts do. Their broadcasts are not monotonous like MLS broadcasts.

Different gripe.

Why do these broadcasts require us to watch 30 seconds of player benches during live play while they show the names of the substitutes?

Is it that big of a deal to just scroll the names while we watch the actual match instead of having to listen for crowd volume to know just how much we are missing?

"But it's in the MLS production manual. Team benches sponsored by blah blah blah."

That's exactly the point I brought up to my son last night. They're showing guys warming up behind the corner flag and droning on about the Home Depot benches and all you hear is the crowd getting amped up. I WANNA SEE WHAT THEY'RE SEEING!!! 🤣

I missed the comeback last night simply because the broadcast has no soul, if that makes any sense, so I just felt so disconnected from the game and just didn't feel like watching the rest. I was honestly not really engaged during the game while I was watching and found myself more and more just passively watching. It's become impossible for me to watch away games without the home radio.

It's gotten worse, not better, since year 1. It's a disaster, I honestly don't really care all that much about the league anymore and find myself watching only because I feel like Ive committed so many years already that I should stick around.
