Under the new league-wide Bag Policy, fans are prohibited from bring the following into a stadium**:

  • Large purses
  • Coolers
  • Briefcases
  • Backpacks
  • Luggage of any kind
  • Computer bags
  • Camera bags
  • Any bag larger than 14’’x14’’x6’’
In addition, all bags will be subject to search upon entry. The bag restriction will not apply to credentialed media, who will continue to enter MLS stadiums through designated entrances and adhere to all posted media bag policies and screenings.

I'm just as frustrated by this as I am by the paper ticket rule. Weeknight games, I don't typically have time to drop my computer back off at home in Connecticut. Am I just supposed to leave my laptop and bag of stuff outside?

Edit: I contacted my rep to see how this is actually getting implemented. The additional restrictions included a security wand or "full pat-down". I'm pretty sure they already have that implemented at YS, so there may not be change there.

This is the same "security theater" bullshit we've been dealing with for 15 freaking years now.

There's not a security expert you can find that thinks this does a damn thing to stop anyone who wants to hurt people. It just provides a false sense of security.

One of my favorite parts of going to games was my ability to bring a cheap deli sammie in a little soft 6 can cooler for eating at halftime. Guess that's done now. Kevin's Sandwich Game = 0, ISIS War On Sandwiches =1.
I think that will be OK as long as it's smaller than the size listed and a bag as opposed to a hard-sided cooler. Please don't quote me to the police if you get thrown out at the gate for arguing about this if they don't let you in with one though.
Lol they're gonna stop people from bringing in baby bags? That should be fun.
No, that was mentioned as a "special consideration." So if you want to sneak something in just make sure to bring a baby with you.

This is what I hate about the new rule. Completely arbitrary and inflexible and not in coordination with anything objective.

Yankee Stadium already had a bag policy set at 16 x 16 x 8. I have a bag I bring to every NYCFC game that is that size and pre-packed with scarves, my ticket cards, etc.

Now, MLS comes up with 14 x 14 x 6. Based on what? Based on nothing. Do I need to get a new bag now? Am I okay with the current one? Honestly, who the fuck knows. The only thing I know for sure is that the difference doesn't matter one bit to ensure anyone's safety.

You can bring a cheese in if you disguise it at as a baby.

I think it is possible nothing will change for us: The original article from Dallas FC says:
"Beginning this Saturday, April 24, a new minimum standard Bag Policy and guest screening measures will be instituted in all 20 MLS venues bringing MLS events in line with security measures taken by the other professional sports leagues in North America."
Emphasis added.
We already comply with the MLB standard, and our current policy is not too different from this, and the only way we are looser is the bag size 16x16x8 instead of 14x14x6.
I can't find a similar announcement on the NYCFC site, and the FAQ page still lists the existing policy:
"Each Guest is welcome to bring one bag into Yankee Stadium provided the bag is soft-sided (e.g., diaper bags, small purses, etc.) and its dimensions do not exceed 16 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches. Briefcases, coolers and other hard-sided bags or containers are not permitted. All bags will be thoroughly inspected before they are permitted into the Stadium. Bag-size bins will be used at inspection points, and bags and their contents must fit without assistance, modification or adjustment. There is no storage area for any items that do not meet security requirements." (Emphasis in original).
Maybe the team is taking its time because we have no home game this weekend, but we do have one a week from today. I know they have sprung announcements on us late before, such as the paper ticket fiasco just a few weeks ago, but I'm cautiously optimistic that the club applied for a waiver saying "we comply with MLB and cannot get out of that, and matching the toughest aspects of both policies would be too restrictive, so can we have a waiver?" Then Patricof bought Garber a beer and Don said sure, why not.

I don't think this will affect us since NYCFC are "guests" at Yankee Stadium, who has their own set of house rules. In addition, I believe Yankee Stadium administration will not impose two sets of parameters for their staff. The bag policy at YS has been in place for a number of years, with no issues.

One positive of not having our own stadium yet? Hopefully....

Contrasting the Sounders position, it will be interesting how they are going to handle this new rule. CenturyLink Field, abides by the NFL bag size limit of 12x12x6... Although, on the Sounders official page, they have a 12x12x12 maximum.
