MLS - April 18 - Charlotte (CF)

Referees were poor tonight. Tori Penso had multiple lectures during the game but only 1 and 4 minutes of added time. Raul didn’t foul the Charlotte player on that yellow card. It was a dive. And he won the ball on the other challenge. A lot of time wasting that went unjustifiably given PRO was supposed to have higher amounts of added time for the actual delays in the match.

Edit: I am dumb.

Tori clearly got dads genes with all the shit referring on display

that's our favorite Chris Penso's wife, not daughter.

I agree. Gustavo's yellow was total bs. Park's yellow was also BS, imho.

Gustavo didn't play well. But then again neither did anyone

I said this on the chat, but I think Pascal is doing a good job given what we have. Obviously wins would be better, but even with the losses and ties we're showing signs up actually doing interesting things (unlike under cushing where that was just boring boring boring all the way through).

FO needs to wake up.

Frustrating night. We had no business losing that game. We can whine about the roster, and it's definitely incomplete and missing a big piece, but even with the players we have we should have boat-raced that team and won this game 3-0. Total smash and grab by Charlotte. The chances we missed were inexplicable in the first half and that game should have been put to bed at halftime. Just one of those unlucky games that happens a few times a year. I'm not putting that game on the roster; the roster is good enough to beat Charlotte. That's just a bad-luck game.

Speaking of bad luck, why the hell was it so cold out there? It was mid-60s during the afternoon. That was a brutal night.

I thought Penso called a generally fair game. Some bad calls on both sides, but the long delays to talk were too much. Stop letting the players talk, just play the game.

The roster is not good enough to beat Charlotte. The game just happened and they beat us.

I disagree. We dominated that game. Deserved to win it. We got goalie'd and we got bad luck tonight.

Also -- surprisingly good and loud crowd. 21,000 on a cool April evening is pretty impressive. For this team to get 21,000 on a night like this at a baseball stadium is damn impressive.

you act like it is 5 degrees and snowing outside man. in my opinion, it's a perfect spring evening. if you dress appropriately, you'd be perfectly comfortable.

We dominated possession, created chances, but we did not finish. We did not play with urgency after going down a goal until the last 10 mins or so. I don't think we got goalie'd. Kalina had a couple nice saves, but for the most part, the saves were routine and he was playing catch with our lofty crosses to our not so tall targets.

Was it bad luck or bad execution? We looked good in buildup but in the final 3rd, when Charlotte collapsed the defense on whoever had the ball, we hit brick walls, kicked it out wide and lofted it in for Kalina to catch or be cleared because we had maybe one or none in the box waiting for that cross. It got slightly better when Talles came on, but still not good enough. If we played with speed, took shots instead of always trying to walk it in, and transitioned with numbers into the box, we'd score a lot more. But unless nico is there or parks is in and crashing the goal, we rarely have someone in there hunting and we desperately need someone who is always going to be there. We're just too easy to defend otherwise.

I continue to like the progress of Ojeda. He continues to easily get to the endline and cross right through the 6-yard box. Last night that ball went straight through and to the far touchline. A real #9 will be salivating for those touch in goals. We don't have anyone crashing the box. But it still speaks well for where Ojeda is headed.

Speaking of where he is headed, who had an Ojeda header nearly going in on their bingo card?

I'll be here all week.

Finally, someone who gets it.

Game can be summed up in one phrase -

“ball not go in.”

We look like a team that can’t score goals because we don’t have a striker, are playing our best player out of position, are relying on a 40 year old to play 90 min x 34 games, and have no one on the bench other than a teenager who should be playing for the 2s. We are going to be saying we wish we were more clinical in the final third a lot as we fight for a middling playoff position once again.

Missed the game so have few notes:

A few people on Reddit were down on KOT but didn’t really say why. Please tell me they were dumb Redditors.

My takeaway is 2 of our 4 wingers are particularly ill-suited to playing without a classic #9 striker, and that’s what we don’t have.

We haven’t had a coherent front line roster since July 2022.

ETA: 2 of 3 if Jones is not regularly available.

I didn't see anything notably negative from KOT. I think the KOT complaining is just lazy group think. He was a legitimate defensive weak link 3 years ago, people latched onto it and don't see the insane amount of improvement he's made year over year to his game. His decision making is exceptional, he has some real offensive abilities and he's very solid defensively, especially for a LB with his level of offensive skill. At this point he's one of the best bargains in the league.

In a broader sense, I'm not sure how you lose a game by scoring zero goals and allowing one goal on a very small number of shots for the opposition and the primary complaint is about one of your defenders.

I don’t think O’Toole is very good. You can identify at least 3 goals this season that he is culpable for. That said he is the least of this roster’s blemishes

Thanks for the KOT responses.
One of NYCFC’s better roster traditions is finding a reasonably solid budget-friendly left back and then some part of the fan base complain he doesn’t play like someone making 3x the salary.
I like Kevin in that role and he adds a less common Swiss Army knife flexibility.
But that doesn’t mean he couldn’t have made a big mistake last night. But it doesn’t sound like he did.

Otoole is the best bargain on our roster. He's not a game changer but he works hard and is more than serviceable. His ability to float into the midfield has helped out tactics a lot and no doubt why he stays a starter.

If any defenders were at fault last night, it was Gustavo and some part Gray. Gustavo loses his man way too easily and isn't the best 1v1 defender imo. Gray battled with zaha and I think just got really tired. He's been playing a lot after all.
