I listen to Japanese artists here and there. I can listen to anything if it's good music. Last week I was listening to a lot of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
I listen to a lot of Scandinavian and Finnish music. Predominately metal and traditional folk.
One of my favorite bands 'Tyr' seemelessly blends the two styles. The intro is a traditional Faroese folk song which leads into a much heavier interpretation.
Yes! Don't listen to it as much anymore, but for a while I was so into Tyr, Amon Amarth, Unleashed, Enslaved, etc. Viking metal rules.
But for dark Scandinavian folk music, you can't beat Wardruna.
This is typically my settle down for the evening band. I was listening to them a lot last week whilst on vacation.
Enslaved are so fucking good. I saw them years and years ago in the city during Bloodfest. Dark Funeral, Cryptopsy, Absu and Goatwhore also played. What a night. My wife and I were underage at the time and we were walking to the bar to get some water. My wife takes a misstep and falls flat on her face. Grutle himself walks over to her to help her up. I guess he felt I was far to meek to deliver this small girl from embarrassment.
Lumsk is another band that is somewhere between atmospheric folk and metal. I wish they'd get more recognition within the community.

That also reminds me that Downfall is a really good movie. You all should watch it if you've only ever seen that one scene with the subtitles dubbed.

Yeah i have seen it and totally agree it is epic ann Bruno Ganz put in a stunning performance.
He is excellent in The Reader and Der Baader Meinhof Komplex.
Anyhow back to music.
I am still stuck in the past to some degree.

yeah ... i mean I actually really dig the new kendrick ... but vince staples takes off from good kid mad city in a different direction. Maybe i just feel they are similar because they are young and west coasty - but vince is doing the rap while Kendrick is doing the art.
Super intelligent lyrics too - they don't sound it on first listen but damn the dude is deep and smart.

They are both rapping for real. The difference for me is that Vince is more adept at stripping it down where Kendrick is dressing it up. Vince is monochrome, Kendrick is color.
Whether he knows it or not, he's somehow influenced by 90s Trip-Hop. Several of these tracks sound like Tricky.

Completely right - had not clicked in my head but that's right on.
See him live - he was a great performer in a tough time slot who basically made fun of white brooklyn (yes I know I'm white bronx) and played new stuff that no one had heard with no apologies (given or needed.) So far my hip hop album of the year based solely on how listenable it is, and how every listen i'm still finding new clever word play, or little ticks in the beats that I had missed before.
Stand out tracks: Norf Norf, Jump off the roof, C.N.B. and the tune with the sampled lady vocals about selling drugs (can't think of the name right now.)

I actually thought this was gonna be a rant thread about the programmed entertainment at YS but thanks for the recommendations. Wasn't expecting to find decent music on this forum at all.
