Nycfc V Charleston

I wasn't too impressed with the way our midfield played today, and Mix in particular. Every touch was back to where the ball came from. There was never any recieving the ball, and turn and look. No playing up through the middle.
And I really wasn't too satisfied at the end of the game when we'd have good chances and no one would pull the trigger. They're all looking to creating the easy empty netter, but you have to take the shots you're given. Too cheeky for me..
You're fucking joking. Or you're a damned moron. He managed the pace. And played a solid handful, at least, of incredible through balls, some of them outside the boot 40 yard diagonals that no one else in MLS,save Michael Bradley, would even dream. Oh yeah, and he half-volleyed a postage stamp golazo. If you really believe what you typed, you may literally be the least knowledgeable soccer observer of all time.

I'd imagine Belfast is as good a place as any if you're going to have to go twosies in a public facility.

You're usually more eloquent than this

My hot take on that game is that the opponent was far below us. I don't know if it means anything that they beat Houston and drew Mickey. We looked good, but we looked good against st mirren too.

Definitely below us but it's a good sign that we did what we are supposed to do and didn't play down to the competition. We could have had 5 or more if we didn't try to be so cute in and around the box.

Charleston is not a bad team. They beat their MLS affiliate and weather permitting, they may have beaten Orlando too. I'm sure they were really frustrated at the whole spectacle of all of this.

Not sure if we watched the same game. I was really impressed by Mix and his hustle and was happy about how easy it looked for him. He also seemed like a leader on the field just by the way he carried himself. The pirlo of our national team

Alright, well I wasn't joking and I'm not a troll. Either you guys have only ever watched MLS soccer or you're too in love with the team to have any critical, unbiased opinions about the game.
I'd heard a lot of hype about mix, obviously, and have watched every game nyc has played so far. I actually thought mix looked more impressive the last game when he came in the second half.
He was involved yesterday, sure, and did score quite a beauty of a goal. But how many times, especially in the first half, did we put the ball on Saunders' feet? Because we couldn't move the ball up through the mid. I just expect more. Better offensive possesion. In the first half how many passes did mix get to the feet of our strikers? Honestly grabavoy had more impact on the attack, maybe throughout the whole game.
So easy on the name calling and insults there buddy. I'm an nyc fan, but I also expect good soccer.

You must not have watched much MLS have you? You're in for a LONG season. We're not going to ever play like Barcelona or even the mothership. If you ever expected that, sell any merch you've purchased.

I think Mix could have a big season in MLS. I mean a guy like Lee Nguyen is below Mix on the national team chart and he scored 20 goals this past season. Really wouldn't surprise me to see Mix be one of the top players in MLS.

You're welcome to your opinion, buddy. It's your right to be wrong. No one here can take that away.

I honestly only got into MLS about 2.5 years ago, so I've watched plenty of other leagues.

See, there is a balance to achieve, not even Messi picks the ball up at midfield and rips a through ball or takes on 5 defenders every time. If you were familiar with Kreis's style, he likes to control the tempo of games and one way to do that is possession in the middle of the park, controlled by (you may have guessed) a Midfielder! Quick one-two combos serve multiple purposes such as maintaining possession and also moving the defense, looking for openings but also making them chase a bit to wear them down physically.

Our plan will be to attack aggressively when we see an opening. We're not going to play extremely direct soccer like a South American squad. And we're damn sure not going to hoof and hope like it's the Championship either. That's not the Kreis way. We will hit some long balls when the risk/reward balance is in our favor. Otherwise, we'll try to have a quick, but controlled build-up. You want Mix to collect the ball in midfield and ping it long, but who the hell is he going to play it to? We have one guy big enough to be a target man on the team, and he certainly doesn't look like he's capable of holding up play, and Villa isnt exactly a burner who's going to get in behind very often.

I'd love to pick up 30 yards on every pass, but no team anywhere does that. Maybe you prefer 1990s EPL style, but the rest of the world has long given up those worthless tactics.

Eh. Re-read your post and get what you're saying in the second one and realize you're not advocating for bad tactics. But I just don't remember Mix playing a lot of balls back to Saunders. I feel like I would since I get nervous every time the ball is near Saunders.

The biggest issue we have going forward is we really are one quality midfielder short....got any leads where we might find one, Mr. EPL?

I think getting Lampard in July will be huge for us. Might not have a winning record by then and I expect some struggles but having him will be big. Also it'll be DP3 time as well.
Currently we do have a problem going forward consistently and that's just a lack of playing time.
Yesterday was a BIG improvement. First time we've had our studs in at once with Mix and Villa. Also there was more fluidity. Grabavoy does look amazing so far. He's got quick feet and his goal shows that.
With time the guy will be much better on the ball. That'll come with an understanding of where the teammates are and where they're going.
I'm okay with passing the ball back if nothing is happening. It's smart football. You're not forcing a bad pass just to make the game exciting. You're making the smart pass and retaining possession.
With due time you'll see more runs and movement off the ball which will greatly improve our ability to move forward.

I agree with kreis's strategy and style of game play. I'm a fan of spanish soccer, hence why I'm here now. And I very much agree with possesion and building an attack vs. direct play over the top or from distance. I'm absolutely not saying I want Mix or Grab taking shots from 30 yards out. I want them to work the play. The only thing I was saying about the game is I was disappointed with our play through the middle of the field. Every pass mix receieved he played it right back where it came for or at least back to the same side. I don't remember if I saw him recieve a ball and turn and look at the rest of the field -- aka look to build the attack.
I'm pretty sure every time Villa actually got the ball on his feet, it's because he dropped back into the mid and got the ball from either our wings, or backs. I don't remember Mix putting the ball on his feet, and that's where I was a little dissappointed. The mid's job is to work the ball up the field, and I'm saying they should be able to do this not just around the center of the field, but through it.
Maybe I'm expecting too much. But for all the hype that was put on him, and honestly the way he played too games ago I believed in it, but last night just wasn't enough. Not enough pressence, not enough attacking mentality, not enough distribution. I thought he was outplayed by Grabavoy...who I'd never heard of before a few weeks ago. That's all.
And as to where to find a better midfielder. I'd say cross your fingers and hope we land Xavi next year. =)

What? Mix got the ball to Villa a bunch of times. We must all have watched a different game.
