NYCFC vs. Pumas… U Pick!

Penalties are a stupid way to decide a game. There. I said it.

I don't think many people disagree. But I don't see a consensus forming on the best acceptable alternative.

if goals normally decide games, then when it can't be goals, then xG should decide it. that way, victory favors the team who actually attacked. better for the sport!

i realize this punishes good defensive teams who make their fewer chances count, but still better than PKs imho

Extra innings. Just keep playing. At least for the two 15-minute periods. At least give the teams a chance to score a "natural" goal.

I seriously can't tell - satire? Or do you mean it. Even I can't go for this though the idea that you reward attacking has appeal.

A time honored tradition, that itself lacks consensus. Some confeds use it, others don't and I think CONCACAF uses it in some competitions but not others. And if that's the purpose you need to add sudden death. Playing 30 extra minutes and ending up back in PKs even though goals were scored is the worst of all possible results, and I don't know of any major competition that allows the first ET goal to end things. And honestly, the idea of extending last night an additional 30 minutes is, oof.

I used to like the idea of removing players every 5 minutes or whatever to open things up, but at some point where that becomes most likely to generate goals, it also stops resembling normal soccer any more than PKs do. And I'm not aware it has ever been seriously tested at any meaningful level.

I'd love to see these and other ideas get tested more.

I'm going to defend kicks from the mark (technically different from PKs in that you can score off rebounds on a PK while you can't in kicks from the mark).

Penalties are a unique skill that some players surprisingly have (Sands), and some players surprisingly don't (Maxi). It's not just the technical skill to put the ball in the net, but it's also a test of mental strength after 90-120 minutes of playing all-out. It takes tremendous skill to save a PK too, so the keepers finally get a chance to shine too. There's no better feeling as a keeper than saving a PK.

I think it's glorious and that there's almost nothing in sports as tense and dramatic as penalty shootouts. You could argue that it's not the best test of team skill, as penalties are almost purely individual skill. But the drama outweighs it for me.

100% agree. They aren't fair from a team perspective, but the adrenaline, anxiety, and chaos behind them are unmatched in anything else. Their physical limits were tested for 90 minutes, now lets test their mentality.
