Santiago Rodriguez [Midfielder]

I never really noticed or paid attention to the flag Santi held at the Cup celebration.
I’m not scandalized or even a little angry, but it’s weird, isn’t it? Like why do that? Is it a custom I’m unaware of?
Apparently it’s the flag of Nacional in Uruguay, a club he previously played for.
Imagine winning a cup and every player holds up a symbol of another club they used to play for. If he wins the league with Botafogo will he hold up an NYCFC flag?
Because that would be weird too.

I never noticed this. I remembered some of the players having flags from their nations (Callens has a Peru flag) which makes sense but a flag from another club is just odd. Now that we are looking at it, what does Taty have around his shoulders? Looks like it could be a flag as well and it's certainly not an Argentina flag.

that's his golden boot fanmade banner, i think?

i always noticed santi holding the nacional flag. i always thought it was weird. it is his boyhood club so maybe it's just something he wanted to share with his boyhood club .. his first championship?

In defense of Santi, fans often pass these guys flags from the stands it could have been complete spontaneity.

Thinking more about this is it really that different than American professional sports like the NBA and NFL that constantly reference where a guy went to college? They get announced with their College in most games and I'm fairly certain I've seen players with references to their colleges during championship celebrations in both basketball and football.

Santi was relatively young at the time of our cup win so he wasn't far removed from the time he spent with his boyhood club that he likely joined at a young age and spent many years with. The more I think about it I think that reference may be less odd than some QB that's been in the NFL for 16 years getting introduced on MNF with a reference to where they went to college for 4 years over a decade and a half ago.

yea good points. i don't have a problem with what santi did. it's not like he held up a red bulls flag or another team within the league. it's his boy hood club. caught me as weird at the time, but didn't think much of it after and after your comparison to colleges, it makes more sense.

It’s his boyhood club, and he came up in their academy. I think he literally used 42 to represent the score of a derby victory he was part of vs peñarol (4-2).
If he wins in botafogo he probably will pull up the same nacional flag. Not the nycfc one.

This type of stuff runs deep for some South American players we just won’t ever understand.
