I've always been intrigued by the politics of European soccer clubs and I chalk it up to their (dwindling) status as fraternal societies and social clubs. In relative small cities, positions in these clubs are tied to power structures and identities that are inherently exclusionary. The American model is simply commercial and few large scale commercial entities can benefit from politicizing their product. I'm pretty confident NYCFC will be inclusionary will still aspirational much like the Big Apple itself.
