Yeah, if you have extra tickets largely for resale purposes, this is looking to be a rough year. I wonder how many STHs are purely ticket speculators.

It's hard for me to afford to keep my tickets if I can't reliably resell for face, but I probably will keep them anyway because of whatever the behavioral economic principle is that says you overvalue keeping things you have.

But please continue complaining/cancelling so I can enjoy the benefits of the FO's panicked response.

Actually from a game theory point of view, I guess I should have joined in. Shit.
Dude, you just wrecked everything.

I have two tickets in section 224 row 19 (the top row) and I'm keeping them for the foreseeable future. They're not that expensive relatively, certainly not $5,000 but maybe $400 each or so, but they are hard to sell if I'm not bringing someone for a particular game. Heck, can't even get anyone here to take 'em either. They're great seats, right near the centerline, and you can see the whole field. Can't quite see the guys sweating the way I could when I was at the front of the supporters section but hey, it's nice to actually have a chair and be out of the rain/sun/snow/whatever. The next section over is around twice the price, so I'm happy with where I am and hope to keep my place in line for the eventual stadium.

Do I love Yankee Stadium? Not particularly, but I love going to the games. I'm in.

That's only proving the point of why people would drop seats.
Which may be your point, tbf.

Disagree with a lot of the last few comments. My resale experience has been great this season. $55 tix selling well above face value. While I'd love a SSS and my brick, the YS experience has been fine. My views are great and the small field is exciting. Being a STH has so many current perks to take advantage of and the accessibility to players and front office really has been well done by the club. My personal love of the game would have me watch the club at a city park if needed. While I respect the decision of those that wish to drop their tickets because we play in YS despite having means (disposable income) to purchase, I can't view those that do as true NYCFC, soccer or NYC fans. Being a STH, in my personal view, is part of representing our city.

Really dude? I have front row behind the bench that cost me roughly $45 a game. I can't sell those for face. FACE! I'm hoping it's the weather, but I'm not in the business of tossing money in the toilet. If people around me are selling their seats for $35, I might as well drop my tickets and buy from them when I can go. I'm not in this to profit and usually give my seats away to friends (maybe sold 6-8 matches in the last 2+ years). But I'm not a sucker either and there's been no stadium news at all or a timeline. I'll probably give it one more year though before changing my seats to SS tickets (so I keep my place in line and don't take too much of a loss if they don't sell).

As for fandome. Give me a fucking break. I've seen every minute of every match this team has ever played. Even shitty preseason streams I had to pay for. Even ordered a scarf shipped from their first match in Manchester, and it's still my favorite. Most of us on here will still watch every match even if we're not season ticket holders. And just the fact we post here shows we give a damn. Sometimes we need to make statements with our wallets to show it to the team too.

I think we may have found our intern.

Yeah, I'm with you. I effectively paid about $250 per match to attend last year. I even have two in front row of second level right behind the goal (rf line) and on the aisle that should go immmediately. Bet I sold them 4 times last year. None this year.

ETA - actually, somewhere around $175 is probably more accurate when I consider I did bring a guest maybe 4 times.

I think switching to SS tickets is the way to go. It saves us our spots and those are the only tickets that seem to have any resale value. I'd probably sell mine each match and buy seats where I want to sit for below face. I could check out all the different sight lines, sit near one of you guys if I felt like it, spoil myself with legends or pitchside some matches with all the money I saved... (especially if I'm buying those below face too)

Can you imagine the FOs reaction if all of us transitioned into SS tickets?

LOL on the intern part...

Parts of the resale problem may be that your seats are behind the bench. Too far from the field and exposed to the elements. If sitting in the rain, I'd want to be close. I have front row in 129. So far this year they sold for $100 ea. Last year I sold 10 games for about the same average. I found the view better there than what I had at pitchside and they are close enough to the SS to get the energy. I sit in 213 under the overhang for rain protection and shade when I sell them.

Still think that wanting to give up tickets is a plastic move. Most of us have done all the things you mentioned, but stand by our club. There's a difference between being there with the club, making the noise, enduring the elements, and being part of the atmosphere and just watching the game on TV. That said, I get moving to a less expensive seat until we get a stadium. At least we'd still be there and saving our place in the STH queue.

I'll join the echo chamber... It's been my plan since deciding to become a founding STH that I'd stay in it for 3 seasons but then drop my tickets if there weren't definitive plans for a SSS after the third season (or at least a lot better communication than there has been thus far). It's a long year, so who knows. I had my hopes up high when we received the stadium survey, but it's been crickets since...

Completely disagree that dropping STH for lack of a SSS is a plastic move or removes our standing as fans. I think the real plastic move is sticking blindly with the ownership. They want my cash and my "membership", then they better supply me with some information. If no fans ever changed their actions or purchasing decisions based on this kind of thing, owners and front offices would never invest more money than the bare minimum. If another 2,000+ STH drop after this season, you can bet the ownership and FO will be looking at SSS possibilities a lot more urgently than if the opposite were to occur. The beauty of the US is that what makes soccers growth more difficult, endless competition, also makes it a fans' market. If owners don't invest the way they should, then there are plenty of other sports and entertainment options out there. Give me a good product or I'm not buying.

At the end of the day, I don't have an endless pile of money (not even close), so while the club means a lot to me, I can't stick around forever hoping the club eventually gives us what we want/deserve. 3 seasons (plus all the lead up time before the club started) is plenty of time at least for a solid plan.

Yup. I got in partly because I wanted to get a brick for my daughter, who was born two months into the 2015 season. If that opportunity keeps fading over the horizon, however, I'm going to take that money and put it to things that benefit her more directly, like a house or her college fund.

Totally get it...
That's why I had included dropping if you have the disposable income. Not everyone has.

I have 3 season tickets....mostly its me who goes to the game (fiance is a nurse and works most weekends) and i sell the other 2....if i cant i ask a family member to come out...i planned for future when i have kids, only if i can get the person thatt sits the seat next to me to sell I will be set.

PS. Same bought season tickets at beginning so I can get my name in stone

I am in for the long term. I love going to the games - it's a great experience for my family. And, the season ticket holder benefits are actually meaningful for me as my kids have gotten to be player escorts and met the players after a game. I really look forward to sharing this with my kids as they grow older.

I have had pretty mediocre seats the last two years, but I've been able to sell them pretty easily. Despite making only about half the games, I've only gotten stuck twice, and overall made a profit the first year and broke even the second. This year, I have much better seats and am confident I won't have problems.

I get how frustrating the first two games have been. The market has been terrible, and the weather has too, and this Saturday will be only marginally better. However, I wouldn't generalize too much based on the first couple games with the worst weather the Club has had for home games. The team is playing well, the Club is developing fun traditions, and there is a lot to feel good about. Let's see how attendance and resale is trending in May and June.

The one area of concern is that the atmosphere in the Stadium suffers greatly when it's as empty as it was 2 weeks ago. I really enjoy making noise, singing songs, and high fiving people around me. If that starts to suffer, that would be a big loss and is the one thing that could make me drop my seats.

While at times acrimonious, this has been a really informative debate to watch from the sidelines. I'll admit to coming into the topic with a starting position that's more sympathetic to the anti-"plastic fan" sentiment than most.

What I've learned instead is that one's likelihood to keep their season tickets seems to be a function of disposable income, perceived likelihood of a SSS, importance of a SSS, current happiness with seats, importance of being a founding member, importance of getting a brick, ...., and finally willingness to stick with the club. The last variable is probably what people are referring to as "plastic"-ity. It's there but it's at the end of a very long list. In the absence of understanding every posters' particular set of values, it's probably better for me to assume best intentions and not "plastic"-ity.

Tl;Dr thank you for opening my mind, forums

What I struggle to account for is the game theory / tragedy of the commons / [some more appropriate model] aspect of this scenario that Gotham Gator Gotham Gator alludes to. I want to say something about the Power of One. Or standing together vs. Falling apart. But I don't have the nomenclature and instead I'm just watching what seems like a flight from the club I love without the means to do anything about it.

Can anyone in the "YS is bad for watching soccer" camp take a shot at explaining why? It's turning in to one of those things that people seem to take for granted that I don't get.

I think the view from the endlines are great. I'd like our SSS to have a wider field (realistic) and be easier to get to from my apartment (unrealistic), but neither of those impact my game day experience. (The field width I find more noticeable if I have to watch a home game on tv for whatever reason)

Good post, but one thing I would just want to clarify is that we should be careful about making this seem like a binary choice, i.e. either you're an STH for life or you're walking away from the club altogether. No matter what I would still want to come to multiple games a season and support the club through thick and thin. (STH or not, I'm sure that those of us who sat through every excruciating moment of 7-0 aren't going anywhere!)

What I don't get is how anyone who is a soccer fan could step foot into that that stadium on gameday, cheer on the team, sing the songs, watch the match, and then come out of it and say - meh, that's not for me. Much less someone who has really invested time and energy into the Club. I love Gameday, even at a Stadium that is not 100% of what we want, and even with a Club that can stumble in its relationship with fans. Watching on TV is nothing even close, and walking away from that kind of entertainment - especially at those prices - is just foolish.

My biggest gripes from 213 are that the noise level stinks because of how open the building is. The supporters still do a great job but we would have an amazing atmosphere in a more intimate ground. This is something that would encourage people to come/stay
Also damn cold in that building when it's freezing out. A rectangular structure would make this a little more bearable
And it would sure be nice for a stadium to be ours 24/7. Signage banners merchandise food vendors. These should be geared to us and our experience not converted and patched on to a baseball stadium.

I think there are some great views and the sound carries real well where I'm sitting. That's not my issue.

As NickFromAstoria NickFromAstoria pointed out, dropping my seasons (or more probably moving the to SS) doesn't mean I'm not going to live matches. As it stands I can only make 7-10 games a year these days. Why pay for 17 if I can't at lease sell the 7-10 I don't make for what it cost me? I can't sit in SS with my daughter, but I can sell those and then buy 2 seats elsewhere when I can go. Hell, it frees me to by 3, 4, 7 seats for a match and ensure I'll get them all close together. Where I sit now, I usually can't purchase right next to me.
