Stadium Discussion

Club promotional email today says "Each first-round playoff ticket purchase will now come with a complimentary deposit toward a full season ticket membership at Etihad Park." It's a promotion by Etihad Airways but regardless: they can't be anywhere near to selling out if they're literally giving away deposits.

I got multiple solicitation emails this month, including the latest "last chance" to restore my status. Joint is going to be empty at this rate.

I think we're 17 months from the stadium opening and they haven't even started selling non-premium areas yet. They said they have 10,000 deposits. Figure only a portion of those will become STH but doesn't include current STH. The stadium seems very likely to be sold out for at least a couple years after it opens.

Paid deposits are only $10 and are refundable. I suggest they anticipate much less than full conversion. Atlanta deposits were $50 for a 2017 opening and refundable and they converted 2/3. $10 deposits 10 years later mean significantly less commitment. Free deposits are just an excuse to have a rep call people.
Which is fine. I'm not predicting an embarrassingly empty stadium, nor would I be surprised if they end up turning away some potential STHs.
But they're not there yet if they are giving away deposits.
It's also possible they made the deposit amount so low, and are now handing them out with playoff tickets, so they can eventually announce that they had to refuse "X" people who put in deposits.

I agree that a refundable $10 deposit is likely more a marketing tool than an attempt to lock in a season ticket holder. That explains why they’re willing to give away free deposits. They want the relationship with the fan.

If we are currently drawing 21,000 or so as we wander about between two baseball stadiums, I am not worried about consistently selling out the new building.

Closer to 22,000 at 21,860. That includes 3 games with more than 25k, which will be the max at New Etihad. Collapse those down to 25,000 and the average becomes 20,537. The lowest was 17,070 on a Wednesday night in May with light rain. That sets the ceiling for current STH seats, probably somewhere between 16,500 and 17,000.

I think they announced 10k deposits recently? It's going to be fine, but I'm confident they're not projecting to be sold out yet barring an absurdly high conversion rate.

I also wonder what the STH target and ceiling are? Apart from a very small number of Club owned seats used for contests, VIPs, etc., and which will probably count as STHs sold, do they want to reserve a few hundred or even 2-3 thousand for ticket packages, single game sales, etc? I don't know enough about the business to know what the industry standard is, and I can think of reasons you would want to do that, and reasons you would not.

Or a player acquisition strategy around the 2 DP slots. I'm not predicting flashy signings. I'm just pointing out that this is a marketing strategy that is still available to them and that they used in 2015 to some effect.

I was thinking something similar. I would go even further and say the signing of Nico as our DP is a good indication to me that they are feeling confident in their ability to meet their sales goals. A flashy signing is such an easy out. If they were concerned, I think we would have seen a different signing.

I believe they will price tickets at a level that will keep average demand right on the verge of sell-outs. They won't have a waiting list. They won't have high secondary market prices outside of limited high demand matches.

That's hard to believe. Regardless of the day of the week, that wouldn't be a good sign if all you could sell was 500 (non STH) tickets to a game.
