The ref kicks out at the player, trips him, and gives him a red card.

All ball. De Jong got no ball and wasn't sent off. Apparently, if you're going to dropkick someone, just don't win the ball first.
It's true! Of course I was being a bit facetious, but the point is if he had not brought his back leg up he should have been fine.
Bringing up the 2nd leg and then pushing off is where he got into trouble. I think he was just trying to cushion the blow from the other player, but it made it look terrible.
