RSL Postmatch

One thing with Shelton, they seemed to be trying to use his height, but every time a ball was lofted in his direction, he lost body position and never got his head on the ball.

They named RJ Allen MOTM in the Stadium, which was a complete joke -- Harrison, and it's not even close. He's the biggest bright spot around this team right now. Kid's going to be good.

For a Thursday night, atmosphere was great. Supporter's section was easily heard across the stadium, and the entire crowd got in on the "NYC" chant after Villa's PK.

The most frustrating part about this result -- RSL looked completely disinterested in going forward until we scored. They were absolutely dominated, then we just fell apart in a 15-minute span. Serious questions need to be asked about why this group, with all the veterans -- especially on the backline -- continues to be so fragile. One goal can not turn into three during a 15-minute span, or whatever it was.

I'm not sure if Lampard can handle this situation. We may never see much from him, he might already be jaded and just waiting for the season to end. A true professional would be driven to earn the fans respect and would not want to go out on this note. Let's see which route he goes from here, I'm not too optimistic though.

This is kind of what happened to Brett Favre. He felt slighted by his longtime team, signed with a rival and sucked.
Now we are just waiting for the humiliating "dick pic"

The first part of this is part of someone post

6 points (1 win and 3 ties) at home out of 9 games or 27 possible points. So far this season I've paid $675 per home point per pitch side seat.
With all of the losing at home... In many ways it's cheaper to keep my seats and not go, while watching at home, thus saving money on concessions. I doubt it will come to that, but it entered my mind tonight.

Some of the ridiculous play on the field and certain roster selections we have to put up with is just mind boggling, and at what point is the massochism of painful losses outweighed by not only the time commuting to/from the stadium, but setting up the babysitter/talking my wife into joining me at the game??? I love watching good soccer, but I've never seen a team that can regurgitate the same types of mind-blowing gaffes every single game - it's like the team has Tourette's and plays great 95% of the time and then loses its shit and uncontrollably spazs out to concede the howler we know they're always good for. I really don't think that can be coached out of the guys committing the errors - like ever, even if we have the best coach in the world - it's just part of their DNA to switch off every game in the worst possible ways.

And as a side note for anybody keeping track - our exalted Goal keeper, that is valued for his leadership skills, now has the 2nd worst save% at 58.8 (worst is 57.4 by NE) and 2nd worst Goals allowed average at 1.86/game (2.0 is worst by Houston). FC is only averaging 1.467 goals scored a game - that unfortunately is a recipe for a losing season.

Tons of positives from this game. And for my own sanity, only positives:
  • Villa is never gonna miss that many chances in a game again. He could have had a hat-trick inside of 20 minutes.
  • Harrison instantly our 2nd best player. I can't tell if he's right footed or left footed and that's a good thing. He has that Messi-like tendency to try and stay on his feet even when he's getting his legs hacked. Perhaps he could be a little more "professional" around the area – Pirlo might finally score a free kick!
  • He's 19, not 21 ;)
  • Pirlo was imperious. The tandem of Iraola and Pirlo still hasn't been tested against a top-class midfield, but holy shit are we are playing some gorgeous stuff.
  • The crowd was fantastic. I'm stoked that the "Villa's on fire" chant is gaining traction. Our attempts to get behind the team even at 3-1 down were rousing. Thank you.
  • OK, one veiled positive – we are going to be so good when we aren't forced to play Ethan White. Offered nothing going forward, was inexplicably out of position every time RSL pushed us back. Whether it's the return of Bravo that allows Iraola to play at right back, or the return of Matarrita that allows RJ Allen to play on the right hand side, or PV deciding to give Martinez another go, Ethan White's performance was the one glaring exception to an otherwise complete performance IMO.

Conspiracy Theory:

Patrick Vieira actually understands that we suck at home. Knowing how the playoff system works, he'd feel more confident being the 5 or 6 seed and having the single match first round game be away. He'd rather not risk being the 3 or 4 seed in a chance to be 1 or 2 seed and having that single match first round game be home.

So Vieira is chalking up this loss to be about over confidence. He says we need to be more humble. I guess NYCFC is suffering from football hubris, similar to vaginal hubris.

I don't disagree. We were dominating RSL so comprehensively that we must have felt like we'd have unlimited opportunities to score.

e.g. Villa's decision to try and chip the goalkeeper and get him sent off in the ~83rd minute is a real headscratcher.

Yeah that holds water. Can't remember who posted the YS pitcher's mound/Lost hatch theory, but it makes more sense. We need a thread on conspiracy theories.

Mendoza was livid after being subbed off. He goes to the last seat on the bench and started kicking the water bottles away, stomping on the ground and chair. He then sat with this shirt over this face for 10 minutes straight.

Getting subbed off for Shelton has to be a real kick in the balls.

I'm still asking for Villa to take our free kicks close to goal. Pirlo has produced nothing thus far this year. Villa scored multiple times off them last year.

And Villa hasn't worn the new captain's armband once this year. #WhereIsTheArmband?

I thought he played a good game. Id be pissed too. He should of stayrd on longer, and definately not subbed for Shelton.

Only saw this while watching the game on YES. The 2nd RSL goal deflected off RJ Allen. Even with a deflection, Josh Saunders can't save shit.

EDIT: Maybe I should have written, Josh Saunders can't save that shit (like every other goalkeeper). Still #StartEirik

Everyone needs to relax. We saw some of the best play in our existence. Yeah shit went south, but a deflection and an own goal. This game could have easily been 4-0 at half. The last two games didn't result in wins, but it's getting there. Character building?

- Jack is the real deal
- Shelton is wack
- Lampard adds nothing
- Mix busts his ass. Almost had two headers too.
- Just watched the game and for those saying Pirlo was "meh" I don't mean to be rude, but you don't know the game...and idc how much you think you do...you'll sound like a total soccer newbie. He was spraying the ball all over the place.
-Iraola still looks good at DM. We have a nice rotation there w/bravo.
-Villa had bad luck
-Ethan white makes me look forward to RJ/Matt combo.
-Mendoza needs to stay on, he's isn't the best, but he creates & tries.
-We need another CB in the rotation.
-Saunders is the biggest anomaly on this team
-Our pitch sucks. Tired of watching players slip
-Nice to hear Ian Joy back...he was good.

Im happy to see Mix & Iraola playing good ball. We need them. This game wasn't lost in the midfield, midfield played good. The attackers couldn't finish and our back-line/GK failed us.
