Official: Maximiliano Moralez signs as 3rd DP

Dude, just...dude. If you're such a damn rockstar fan, how did you not have an MLS loyalty before? How did you ever vent your soccer geniuz before you joined here 3 whole days ago?
Didnt mean to say like no one has knowledge about others players just meant MPG is so bad I'm sure no one else has heard of him but I just kept to myself waiting one day to take over nycfc forums. This is a movement!

This signing is confusing to me if, for no other reason, the trajectory of his career. I don't follow Serie A or Liga MX so I've never seen him play. From the handful of articles I read, he did well at Atalanta 2011-15, who picked him up after they were promoted from Serie B. From there it's a bit puzzling.

Before he moved to León in 2016, he apparently considered moving to Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Premier League the prior year, but walked away from a deal on the table, 'choosing family over money.' (bet365.it, via google translate). That seems like a weird move to even consider at age 28?

He only started in 15 of the 35 games he played with León (out of a possible 49 games: 2 where he was on the bench, and 12 where he didn't even make the team sheet; this includes a game on 2/12 which I probably shouldn't even count, though he did sub into a game on 2/5).

His year at León was actually with 3 different managers. He was brought in under Pizzi who left within Maxi's first month to take over the Chilean nat'l team. Then Luis Fernando Tena who only lasted 8 months until their current manager, Torrente, took over. I didn't really find anything indicating why he wasn't getting minutes under Tena or Torrente but he was considering a move back to Argentine Club Racing. (amLeon and ASMexico, via google translate). He sounded pleased to have a fresh chance to earn a starting spot when Torrente arrived (milenio, via google translate), but that didn't really pan out.

The injury history on transfermarkt is not showing any injuries as the reason he wasn't in the squad, but I don't know if that's reliable or not. I did see mentions of injury in the liguilla playoffs vs. Tijuana, but he was actually getting limited minutes during that time. A lot of the games he failed to make the bench were months earlier under Tena.

Watching the game today, remember that Sacha Klejstan is on DP wages but bought down. Valerie and Piatti are on that level but have DP tags.

For this type of contract/player, he absolutely must have the impact of those three guys. Klejstan was probably the most vital cog in MLS last year. Just opened up opposing defenses. If this guy isn't on a level similar to those guys, this is a MASSIVE failure on the Club's part.
Unrealistic expectations, meet massive disappointment.

Oh nice to meet you.

Nice to meet me. Me? Fuck off you wanker.

Why are the expectations unrealistic? Those guys are on similar wages. They play the same position.

He was hurt for a while in Mexico, and then the team changed managers and he was not in the new guy's plans. According to the Soccer-In-the-City guys, he has recovered from the injury and is back in good form.

Here's the question - moving to Leon is a weird move in my eyes for a guy in his prime playing in Serie A. Why did he move to a mediocre Liga MX side? I'd be more comfortable if he had gone back to Argentina

leon was not a mediocre side...they were not a relegation team still making playoffs or mid table....leon has some of carlos slim money so it was probably easier for them to meet the transfer fee/salary than an argentenian side.

My understanding is that he was supposed to be a splashy get for the Mexican league, with a decent fee paid (5 or 6 million, if I recall), and for whatever reason (maybe some bruises, team turmoil, coaching turnover, etc.) it didn't work out. He's got the game to be a great player in Mexico or the US, but now with the DP tag, he really has to earn it to justify it. I wouldn't be surprised if he does. Though I still can't help thinking about the sure(er) things we could have gotten for the right price. I am very excited to have him, but will wait for hindsight to decide whether we aimed too low for the DP.

everyone is saying we could of gotten a better DP....can you guys throw names out there ( except the obvious khedira) i mean its easy to complain but not sure who was going to come in winter or even want to come to MLS.

We don't need a name right now. In the long run we are better off getting a better player next year than being stuck with a bad DP for 3 years.

And I hate to be in the position as a club of "who else could we get anyway?" We are better than that.

i dont think in MLS you can be "stuck" with one. if its not working out i think if there is interest from another international team MLS will cut losses and let them go. not as many rules/ strings attached with DP's than with American Players

Thank you. Would be interested to hear his answer (or Leon's) to why it didn't work out. Didn't know he was supposed to be a flashy signing for Liga MX.

I do think in this case it will be very hard for us to cut our losses with him in the event he doesn't work out. Regardless of the circumstances that caused it (in this case it sounds like a coach that didn't favor him) as danger danger pointed out his trajectory from a global perspective is solidly downward Serie A -> mid table Liga MX -> mid table Liga MX bench -> MLS. If he struggles for us I don't think many will be lining up to help us cut our losses.
