Official: Maximiliano Moralez signs as 3rd DP

I do think in this case it will be very hard for us to cut our losses with him in the event he doesn't work out. Regardless of the circumstances that caused it (in this case it sounds like a coach that didn't favor him) as danger pointed out his trajectory from a global perspective is solidly downward Serie A -> mid table Liga MX -> mid table Liga MX bench -> MLS. If he struggles for us I don't think many will be lining up to help us cut our losses.

racing and boca juniors wanted him this winter period....i dont think one more year will change that...especially racing since thats where he started his pro career.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but even just from a league trajectory stand point this seems like a disappointing signing. Clearly one of the progress indicators for the MLS is closing the talent gap between MLS and Liga MX with the ultimate goal being more consistently competitive showing from MLS teams in CONCACAF. Not really a mark a confidence when we are picking up cast offs from Liga MX to make them the third highest paid player on one of MLS's marque franchises.

Before I get a lecture on how it's starter depth and not DPs that are the primary area that needs improvement to compete with Liga Mx, I know that, I'm just pointing out that from a perception stand point it's not the strongest move by NYCFC and MLS.

I guess it all depends on what we are paying him. There's a different between wanting a player and being willing to take on his wages, see the current Mix situation.

maybe because im a fan of nycfc and careless about the rest of the league that i dont see it this way. lets win the MLS cup first or at least qualify to the CCL then we can worry about liga mx. i want to win here first then take over the region.

plus not many if any top liga mx players have come here, they have been players out on loan or players not really used.

gio does not count since he never played in liga mx.

It was a panic buy after being turned down by other targets.

Not saying he won't pan out or be an addition to the team, but this is like one of the big teams in Europe missing on all of their publicized targets and an hour before the window closes they announce a signing that nobody had heard a squeak about and leaves people saying, "huh?"

everyone is saying we could of gotten a better DP....can you guys throw names out there ( except the obvious khedira) i mean its easy to complain but not sure who was going to come in winter or even want to come to MLS.

You can't really throw names out there. The only thing you can really do is compare him to other league DPs. He probably does fall into the DP category then. Not speaking of production, but when you have Villa, Lampard & Pirlo...his name and reputation is not of that caliper. Despite some decent DP signings, I still don't see any big name players coming in. We are still in the fantasy phase.

thats fair...when i asked names i asked names of any player with good production that could of helped. or at least gotten at a "better price" even if the player is not famous at all.

i mean who is to say this player wont be a top producer just because everyone gets taken away by the fact that he went from serie a to liga mx and did not get playing time with new coach. i mean doesnt mean he is complete trash.

Somebody mentioned that they would trust Maxi's prestige if he had come back to Argentina rather than gone to MX. So I would point out that Mexican sides at this point tend to have more money and be more stable that Argentinian ones, I think. The Argentine Primera league is fun in part because of the turmoil (historic clubs going down, small provincial sides shooting up and challenging, etc) and because the country produces so much talent that you can always get a glimpse of the amazing 17 year old before he's sold to Europe. But Liga MX may be a better destination than a return to Boca or Racing right now. For example, Luis Advincula, a Peruvian RB that has been in Portugal and Bundesliga and belongs to a Turkish club spent a successful 6 months on loan with Newells, but was finally sold to Tigres because Newells didn't have money to buy. Argentinian clubs are a mess right now, but have fantastic youth teams.

I see your point but I do think global perception hurts us when we try to get younger top DP players to come here. I don't see articles with international managers complaining when their players join Liga MX teams (admittedly I do not follow Liga MX very closely). Just as one example France seems to have no problem with Gignac. I do see the Italy manager regularly talking about his disapproval of Gio playing in an "inferior" league. Fair or not it's something the MLS needs to worry about in order to seek better, younger DPs.

Also, I have the impression that the shine of both CFG and NYC distorts our expectations a bit. Other teams sign lots of DPs at this level of cost/resume with quite a lot of success. This is relatively high end for an MLS DP. I mean, who is Jozy Altidore in the context of world class strikers? Less than a nobody. His calling card is being a USMNT regular. Same for Bradley. But both are respected and quite successful DPs in our league. I mean, at this point in their careers Bradley is many many rungs below Khedira in the world class soccer ladder but nobody gets scandalized because Toronto is bringing back home a USMNT stalwart. Lodeiro was playing for Boca, not for Villarreal or Roma or Liverpool. We have admitted that the key players for most relegation-threatened EPL sides are beyond our reach. Guys that will be playing in the Championship next year. So Maxi is a good DP for us, at least on paper IMHO.

i dont think in MLS you can be "stuck" with one. if its not working out i think if there is interest from another international team MLS will cut losses and let them go. not as many rules/ strings attached with DP's than with American Players
Well, I don't think we will get rid of him in a year, even if he's terrible. We would at least give him two. So we are stuck with a potentially terrible DP signing for two years, when we could have had a dynamite one next season. That is assuming that there wasn't a better alternative this time around as it is.

In fact, looking at just the DP's that have gone to other clubs this season it seems that there were better options out there. I would have been happier with both Elis and Almiron who went to other clubs this January.

That was me. If I was wrong, then I am happy to eat crow. I look at Boca and River Plate as standard bearers for South America because of the talent that has come through to MLS and Europe. Didn't realize things were such a mess down there.

i think the focus was DM at the time but then that was not working out so they went and got other midfielders to try and fill the role and then decided to get a creative mid to try and improve.

and elis is on loan from monterrey....if he has monster season with dynamo monterrey can call him back

money issues has been a very common theme down there for a while now...the only thing saving them is that they are still producing fantastic players that euro teams buy them and keeping them alive. but i think they are leaving much younger than before.

So wouldn't a loan pick up have been perfect in that case? Elis has a monster season, he gets called back, and then we can get a DM like we really wanted? Instead of being stuck with a player in a position that we don't need for three years?

why? elis is a forward we have villa, okoli, and maybe even shelton in that position.

maxi wont be the striker up front....i have not seen elis much but i could of sword he is the point of attack not behind a striker.

and if we did that we still have the DM role unprotected at all...now we have something to kinda work with with players that "can play" the position.

and you keep thinking were going to be in a mix situation with this guy, and yes this position is needed....who else can create positions or be as mobile as villa? there really isint one....no one moves off the ball like villa does...thats one big issue with this team ive seen in two years. so it wont hurt

I'm not saying I wanted Elis either, I didn't. Just that there were other options out there than Maxi.

Yeah, his signing won't hurt. But not hurting the team is something we should be shooting higher for with our DP's. The DP's we sign should be the best players in their position in the league.
