2017 Roster Discussion

Forget about GAM and TAM and Maxi - do any of us honestly believe that this team can win MLS Cup without another impact player? I sure as hell don't.

They brought up Chelsea losing an assistant coach after the match yesterday.

I do. We can make the playoffs, and the cup is a crap shoot at that point. Seattle was far from the best team last year and they had plenty of holes in their team. And they won it.

I also think we can win the league with our team, but half of Patrick Vieira's brain needs to get the hell out of the way of the other half

In the history of the league, there are a handful (with some fingers missing) of big name, multi-million dollar, internationally famous DPs who earn their contract. Mostly foul balls, with an occasional single, and rarely a home run. For every David Villa there are dozens of Gerrards, Lampards, and Pirlos (and many much worse than those). Half of the content on here lately (and reasonably so) is complaining about the burden of Pirlo. The six million dollar type players are usually the vacationers, mostly hobbled by beaten down bodies, and always past the days of desiring to play for European national team. Unless Trump really did fuck it up for us, the Khedira we could get will be the Khedira a couple of years from now with a few more injuries. We went 1 for 3 on old, huge contract guys. Villa made me feel better about Lampard, but can only do so much to make me feel better about another year of being tactically hampered by Pirlo.

That’s a long-winded lead-in for me to say that I would prefer Alessandrini, Almiron, Lodeiro, Maxi, and efforts to sign the players who will turn out to be Piatti, Valeri and Diaz. It’s too early to judge Maxi. I think that he has looked great and will be an important game-changer when the team clicks and (if/when) PV lines us up most effectively. Even before judgment day on Maxi, I would take three Maxis over three Gerrards without hesitation. I could be off about Maxi, and if I am, then it’s a big miss by the team (especially since I don't expect a superstar DP signing this summer). From what I understand, that is the direction the team is moving in the future. There is still the possibility of the can’t-say-no signing of an Iniesta (and I can’t help still being attracted to the idea of the sexy signing even with the risk of an expensive miss). But our future DPs will be more of the two million dollar guys, than the six million dollar ones. A six million dollar player is Rooney or a one-legged Zlatan. A two million dollar player is Almiron (at least on the salary part). Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you assess the decision-making abilities of the team brains, this requires the precision and scouting acumen of jumping on an Almiron or guessing right on a Piatti. I believe that is where we are going to win or lose in the future. If we were to continue to sign three old Euro superstars, it’s more likely going to be the latter.

By the way, for all the preseason talk about how much money Atlanta was spending, they really aren't spending that much money. They only have one player making more than $1M, their other two DP's are both under $1M in base salary. They found diamonds in the rough, they didn't go crazy and spend $20M.

Fart noise. I like you. But you're consistently super sunshine-y, so I must discount your credibility or the credence I give it commensurately.
It's not that I'm super sunshine-y, although that *is* one of my best qualities of course, it's that sometimes the doom-and-gloom of a single bad loss makes everyone here lose their minds. Same is true when Pirlo has a "bad" game. But I meant what I said above. Once the rest of the team wakes up our opponents won't be able to double team Pirlo all the time, and that will mean he can resume his roll of being the boss. I hope.

Everyone hates McNamara and questions Maxi at the moment, but if those two can turn it on we'll be super dangerous. So sure, maybe that's super sunshine-y of me. But hey, I grew up a Mets fan from the day the team was formed. I *had to* be super sunshine-y just to survive through elementary school, ya know?

Let's also walk back the criticism of Minnesota for not having DPs to start the season. We'll see if they keep to their stated intention to get some this summer, but it seems clear right now that their hideous start was not for lack of DPs but a combo of taking time to jell and one hideously bad player they did sign with a lot of TAM. Minnesota's record in games Demidov started was 0-3-0 with a -12 GD and average GA of 5.33. In the 5 games he was benched they are 2-1-2 with a GD of +1 and and average GA of 1.6. So they whiffed terribly on one horrifically bad player, but otherwise were correct in their assessment that they have a team that is respectable enough. If they actually sign a couple of DPs this summer with the knowledge of what their biggest needs are, I say well done. Their record after 8 games is better than ours was.

Those numbers don't include the transfer fees though. Didn't they pay $8 million for Almiron?

So, the exception to the $1 million salary limit on using TAM is if you convert a DP to TAM in the summer, you can convert someone who earns up to $1.5 million on a pro-rated basis. This begs the question on whether the $1.5 million is after or before the pro-ration - i.e. does that mean you can buy down a guy making up to $3 million because his pro-rated amount for the remaining half season is $1.5 million?

Yes. Why wouldn't I believe that we CAN win MLS Cup without another impact player? Winning Supporter's Shield? I can hear that argument.

This is a very talented squad that has been put together. We've all talked about how talented our CB pairing is, and how good Johnson has been. Villa is still a world class striker, Jack Harrison is playing out of his mind. Get Mata back healthy and Wallace back up top, thats another great combo. Maxi has been playing pretty well, but I think there is more in him.

That said, I have no reason to believe that this team IS NOT CAPABLE of winning a few games in a row in October/November. Especially after watching Seattle win it last year without Dempsey.

And considering the odds, we should be happy that we landed one of the most impactful guys ever in Villa, both on the pitch and outside. Also, this is a truism, but predicting how or when a player clicks and goes from being promising to being amazing (if ever) is really, really difficult. And having a reasonable guarantee that he'll remain at that level, is equally tough.
I have a case in point you may have heard about or not: Christian Cueva, a Peruvian and the current #10 at Sao Paulo. He is 25. This is a guy who was stuck in the 200k to 600k value for years, promising enough to go abroad (to Chile and to Rayo Vallecano B) but not sticking. Went to Toulca in Liga MX in 2015, and did so-so but with flashes that tempted Sao Paulo to apparently overpay for him in 2016, to the tune of 2.2 million. The result: he has had a phenomenal year in Brazil, and you couldn't buy him now for less than 8 to 10 million. His contract runs to 2020. Will he sustain it? Will he crash and burn? Return to earth? I don't know but the way he's playing right now he would eat up MLS. Then again, he didn't do it in Liga MX, and that was only 1 year before. Point being: Piatti or Valeri or Almiron may have not caught fire in other leagues, and viceversa. It's very difficult to say with unproven guys, and prohibitively expensive with proven ones. And after 32 some go downhill at such speed they're almost unrecognizable.

I don't think everyone hates McNamara, he just can't start at the wing for us any more if we want to play a press from the front style of play. I am perfectly fine with him coming off the bench as the offensive Pirlo sub in the midfield. He's a great American player to have on roster, but I think the days of players like him starting in MLS are coming to an end.

If they come away in the next year with a #10 to replace Venegas, a winger to play on the other side of Molino, and a holding midfielder next to Cronin, and use their other resources to shore up the backline, they could have a pretty good MLS team when they open their stadium.

Yep. I suspect we could have objected since these aren't official FIFA match dates, but the better thing is to let him go. This means he will be around for the Atlanta game and then gone for at least the next 3.

Villa
McNamara
Chanot

That's the running order so far
I have a feeling Chanot has moved in front of TMac. If he ever gets it, it's a sympathy captaincy. We were chasing the game needing 2 goals and TMac didn't make the pitch, so it may be hard to argue with who the real leader is on the team besides Villa.
