its almost like people dont read my posts.
Mata is essentially out for the season. If he manages to make it back for the playoffs, we definitely aren't throwing out a whole new formation that the team hasn't practiced at all.

And Mata, much like Sweat, a lot of his strengths are on the offense side of the ball. You eliminate that whole element of his game by having him play in a back 3

So you want to put Pirlo in front of just 3 backs? Wow, would you also bring back Josh Saunders and Kwame Watson-Siriboe? It seems like your objective is to give up goals, so why not?

The best place to play Pirlo is up top with Villa. This limits his defensive liability, keeps the midfield strong, and you can still get some of the strength's of Pirlo's game at times. Would it be the ideal way to play? hell no, but if the conditions are to play Pirlo at all costs, I think it's the best spot.

again it was a fully healthy hypothetical. you dont have to agree with me but at least read what i wrote.

Mata would make a fine defender if that was his role. He has more skill than most our defenders, vieira just chooses to play him as an offensive wing back.

C"MON MAN
I love Mata, but he is at best a good defensive player. Chanot, Callens, and even Brillant are more skilled defensively. Vieira chooses to play him as an offensive wing back because that is his best skill set and best fit for the team.

Man we really need a game to talk about.

We have all said it's fine to have differing opinions here, but we as a forum are not great at disagreeing amicably.

For the record, I think playing Maxi in the left wing is totally reasonable (with a midfield 3 of Herrera, Ring and Pirlo). Tommy drifts inside anyway, and we have very aggressive left backs, so it's really not too different from a 4-4-2 diamond in practice.

I did read it. Hence my comment on how I don't think that plays to Mata's strengths.

And it's not that I think Mata is a bad defender. I also think he can be a good defender. But you are asking him to totally change his game just to get Pirlo on the field?

Its not about getting Pirlo on the field... its about getting our best players on the field. You guys think this is all about Pirlo but youre wrong.

I'm all for getting the best players on the field. But it's also about getting the best from the players that are on the field.

Moving 2-3 players into positions that they might be able to sufficiently play, but aren't their strongest just to add 1 other current bench player seems like a net negative

people in this forum would prefer mikey lopez at right back and brillant than have pirlo on the field. if thats not some negative bias idk what is.

Not that I agree with them, since I pretty much always hate when Mikey is playing, but I still think that is different. Playing Mikey at RB or even Brilliant at RB means one position is going to be negative. Moving multiple players around for a 3-4-3 still seems worse. Especially since I am not sure Pirlo's positives are worth it.

Also, I really don't like Pirlo as the furthest man back in the midfield. I know we played that way earlier in the year, but it always makes me nervous

A system requires the best players with the right skills to be inserted. It's not as simple as just picking the best players and putting them out there.

PV has a very rigid system that requires very specific skills and roles. It didn't work at all last year until we had Iraola playing a true Defensive Midfield role. That's Ring's spot this year - move him away from it and they system will break down. It also requires one of the 2 outside backs to bomb forward continuously- force Mata to stay back and he's no longer the best person for the role as a better defender would be used but that then nullifies the planned offensive overload on the left side. Remove Hererra from his box2box in the middle, not on the outside like you suggest, and we lose the guy that's supposed to cover the most ground putting out fires and supporting the attack.

It's not that people are railings against you posts because they are mean posters, rather I think there's a general frustration (at least for me) that you're tossing ideas out that are akin to FIFA PlayStation lineups without really understanding what PV is trying to do. And you do it with little backup and justification (refer to my stats post about Pirlo yesterday). I don't always agree with PV's rigidity, but his Plan A is pretty damn brilliant when the right players are used. The wrong players make it look like a dumpster fire.

I do think playing Maxi on the left wing and that midfield is reasonable when we are missing Wallace. Though I'm not certain that would be my choice. If Camargo can translate his Panama performances into a NYCFC kit, then I'd have him out there. If we start to see more positive minutes out of JLew, then I may have him out there. I may even prefer TMac out on the wing, though I'm not completely certain. I'm just not certain I want to mess with our midfield (arguably one of the best in MLS). I kinda wish we could simulate one game with Maxi on LW and Pirlo in the midfield. I'm just not certain Maxi has the tenacity to play defensively outside.

With Wallace available though, I don't see any reason to change the lineup.

regardless how genius u may think it is. Its been basically proven that that lineup is not a cup contending lineup, itll get us through the regular season but thats about it. Im down to lose a game or 2 to try something else.
