NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

A team is allowed to amortize a transfer fee for one contract at a time. For the rest, the transfer fee hits the cap the year it is paid.

I think there is also a low limit on the one contract they can amortize, maybe $500k. So you can't amortize any significant transfer fee over a long period of time. Basically if you are shelling out bucks for a player he's going to be a DP.

I haven't followed MLS for long, so I didn't understand the ins and outs of how DP status is assigned. I didn't know that DP status depended both on the salary and/or transfer fee of the player. In the case of Almiron both are very high. The numbers I saw were 7.5 million Euro transfer and 2.95 million dollar salary. I just saw in Transfermarkt that CFG paid 900K euro for Yangel. Does that mean that in the hypothetical that it had been NYCFC directly who had purchased him, he could have been bought down from DP status using TAM or GAM? Please enlighten.

Maxi is entirely TAMable. The rumored number for 2018 and 2019 is $2 Million. MLS GMs are grumbling that MLS is dragging their feet on making this official, but that's the number. That money HAS to be used for 2018 and 2019.

We go into next year with:
DP: David Villa (1 year left on contract)
DP: Maxi Moralez (2 years left on contract)
DP: Empty
TAM: $2 Million

You could conceivably use $1.5 Million of TAM on Maxi to make him hit the Cap just below the rumored $500k cap charge mark. You could then go and get two new DPs for 2018. As Villa could roll off the roster at the end of 2018, you would go into 2019 with Moralez back as a DP for the final year of his contract, plus the 2 DPs that were brought in for 2018. You would still have $500k of TAM left for 2019.

The more interesting thought, to me at least, is that you go buy a young guy - someone like a Herrera even - pay a transfer fee for him and pay him middle of the road MLS wages - figure somewhere in the $250k-$350k range. He hits your DP charge for 2018 because you choose to frontload the transfer fee. He then rolls off the DP list for 2019.

You could also choose to use the TAM on a transfer fee if the cap charge was big enough.

I’d love for the numbers guys to figure out how to make Maxi a TAM player and then have the flexibility to bring in two new DPs. But conversely, we could conceivably do very well bringing in 1DP and finding 2-3 more TAM Ring/Callens/Chanots (both that they’re currently TAM, but the cumulative ways they affect the match with their levels of play). That may provide greater dividends than using the majority of TAM (if even possible) to bring Maxi down.

I actually like this idea best. $1 Million of TAM each for 2018 and 2019 buys you upgrades and depth. Imagine being able to replace T-Mac, Shelton and Lopez with guys making $500k.

I will point out that I'm good with this if we are replacing those guys from a minutes perspective with guys making $500k.

Shelton and Lopez, their status as Americans, and their low salaries, I would not replace with guys making $500k.

But I'm assuming the point you were making was the first.

False, for two reasons.

1) TAM must be used on a new contract. It can not be applied to an existing contract, only GAM.
2) TAM can only be applied to players making between the maximum and $1 million. It can not be used to buy down someone signed to a $1 million or greater deal.

That's why it's called "targeted" allocation money. It's targeted at new players earning between ~$500k and $1 million in order to improve roster slots 4-6 across the league.

In addition, GAM can't be used to buy down Maxi either, as you can only pay off up to 50% of a player's contract with GAM, if we even had that much anyway.

You do have to use TAM to facilitate a new contract, that's true, but this can be done by buying down an existing DP with TAM and signing a new DP. LA Galaxy did this with Omar Gonzalez when TAM first came about.

ETA: There are rumors that the $1 million max salary for using TAM is going to be increased.

ETA: Regarding our TAM needs in 2018, I notice that none of the players on which we have used TAM (Brillant, Chanot, Ring) earn over the league maximum, which means we used the TAM on transfer fees and not on their compensation. This means we won't be using TAM on them in 2018 (unless one is a Special Discovery Player).

Good point, I forgot about that. But the $1 million limit still applies.

Is this a new rumor?

I've heard the rumor that the amount of TAM each team receives next year may go to $2 million. The max contract that TAM can be applied to is a separate issue, unless you are talking about a separate rumor.

We were talking about two different things. Sorry

Iniesta resigned with Barca to take him through to retirement. Not coming here. Scratch his name off of the DP3 list.

Any interest in Bakary Sako? Looking at LW'ers on expiring contracts. He's struggling at Palace, could be had cheap/free.

As a DP, I'd rather not get someone who would struggle to make a team that will probably be mathematically be relegated halfway through the premier league season.

My thoughts have been on Ki from Swansea for a bit now. Swans look like a relegation side, though he'd only be able to come in the summer it seems.

Came up a couple of months ago. As I said then, "I like KI. But he disappears for extended periods. Unless he shapes up he's become a bit of an albatross for Swansea. He could be a very good sub on a better team who could afford a player like that, who shows quality in limited bursts. That does not make him a good DP in MLS."

I'm curious what people see in him. He also has zero appearances this season due to a knee injury suffered in June. He only had 13 appearances last year, when he was not injured.
