Not a terrible result for Syria. They have to at least tie in regulation in Australia, assuming the tie is not scoreless.

Holy hell, what the hell is happening in CONMEBOL. One round of games left and Brazil is the only team to qualify so far.

Argentina and Chile are both in trouble of not qualifying. And things aren't very comfortable for Colombia either:
  • Uruguay qualifies with a win/draw against Bolivia. Even if they lose and other games go against their way, they have a huge GD advantage. They are all but qualified.
  • Argentina qualifies with :
    • A win at Ecuador AND a Colombia-Peru draw
    • A win at Ecuador AND a Chile loss/draw at Brazil
    • There is a scenario where they qualify with a draw, but there's a lot of moving parts there.
  • Argentina is eliminated with:
    • A loss at Ecuador AND a Peru win/draw against Colombia
    • A loss at Ecuador AND a Paraguay win against Venezuela
    • A loss at Ecuador AND a Peru loss against Colombia (if Argentina loses by more or the same as Peru)
    • A draw at Ecuador AND a Paraguay win against Venezuela AND a Chile win/draw at Brazil
    • A draw at Ecuador AND a Colombia-Peru draw AND a Paraguay win against Venezuela
    • A draw at Ecuador AND a Colombia-Peru draw AND a Chile win/draw at Brazil
  • Colombia qualifies with:
    • A win at Peru
    • A draw at Peru AND a Argentina loss/draw at Ecuador
    • A draw at Peru AND a Chile loss/draw at Brazil
  • Colombia is eliminated with:
    • A loss at Peru AND two of the following:
      • a Chile win/draw at Brazil
      • a Paraguay win against Venezuela
      • a Argentina win at Ecuador
      • a Argentina draw at Ecuador (if Colombia loses by 2+ OR if Colombia loses by 2 and Argentina makes up 4 goals scored)
  • Chile qualifies with:
    • A win at Brazil
    • A draw at Brazil AND a Argentina loss/draw at Ecuador
  • Chile is eliminated with:
    • A loss at Brazil AND a Argentina win at Ecuador AND a Paraguay win against Venezuela
  • Peru qualifies with:
    • A win against Colombia AND a Argentina loss/draw at Ecuador or Argentina win by less or same amount of goals
    • A win against Colombia AND a Chile loss/draw at Brazil
    • A draw against Colombia AND a Argentina loss/draw at Ecuador AND a Chile loss at Brazil AND a Paraguay loss/draw against Venezuela
  • Peru is eliminated with:
    • A loss against Colombia AND one of the following:
      • Argentina win/draw at Ecuador
      • Paraguay win against Venezuela
    • A draw against Colombia AND two of the following:
      • Argentina win at Ecuador
      • Chile win/draw at Brazil
      • Paraguay win against Venezuela
  • Paraguay qualifies with:
    • A win against Venezuela AND
      • Argentina loss/draw at Ecuador AND Chile loss at Brazil
  • Paraguay is eliminated with:
    • Loss/draw against Venezuela
    • A win against Venezuela AND a Argentina win at Ecuador AND a Chile win/draw at Brazil

I don't know why I geek out about this so much.

Nice nesting, brah

The interesting match today is Iceland at Turkey. Group I in Europe is a hot mess with 4 teams within 2 points of each other at the top. This is between two of them, and the winner will have a leg up to finish first or second.

there is always a group like this....i find it cool

curious how this new "UEFA Nationa League" will play out....will it really help team improve or not

Iceland up 2-0 on the Turks. Goals by Gudmundsson and Bjarnason.

Iceland have Kosovo next, which is as close to an automatic 3 points as you can get. Looking good for some Thunderclaps in Russia next summer.

and Croatia drew....its all on Iceland to win at home and they are in
ugh fuck fuck fuck. I couldnt find the game and followed it on twitter. All I saw was iceland folks asking finland to help their nordic brothers, now i ask for our balkan brothers to get a tie monday. I don't like our chances in a playoff. hell i don't like our chance vs Ukraine either. They are falling apart at the seams.

i always thought of them being a solid team...with rakitic and modric in the middle it should be good team but i always see them struggle. what up with them?

Italy were woeful. Wouldnt surprise me if they even bowed out in the playoff stage.

They sure handed it to Isreal this cycle. So Kal V'chomer....

Yesterday, only Spain clinched their spot in the final as Italy joined Northern Ireland in clinching a UEFA playoff spot (note they both could be technically passed on points as the worst second place team in UEFA is eliminated).

Eliminated yesterday were Austria, Albania, Turkey, and Mali.

Today is more UEFA and a lot of CAF and one last CONCACAF:

CONCACAF:
  • Costa Rica advance with a win over Honduras
UEFA:
  • France advances with a win at Bulgaria AND a Sweden loss to Luxembourg
  • Bulgaria is eliminated with a loss/draw to France
  • Netherlands are eliminated with a loss at Belarus AND a Sweden win/draw against Luxembourg OR a draw at Belarus and a Sweden win against Luxembourg AND a France win/draw at Bulgaria
  • Switzerland advance with a win against Hungary AND a Portugal loss/draw at Andorra OR a draw against Hungary AND a Portugal loss at Andorra
  • Greece is eliminated with a loss at Cyprus AND a Bosnia win against Belgium
  • Cyprus is eliminated with a loss to Greece OR a draw to Greece AND a Bosnia win/draw against Belgium
  • Estonia - in order to stay alive, they need a win at Gibraltar AND a Bosnia loss to Belgium AND a Greece loss/draw at Cyprus
CAF:
  • Tunisia advances with a win at Guinea AND a DR Congo loss/draw at Libya OR a draw at Guinea AND a DR Congo loss at Libya
  • DR Congo is eliminated with the above scenario
  • Libya is eliminated with a loss/draw to DR Congo OR a Tunisia win/draw at Guinea
  • Nigeria advances with a win against Zambia (which would eliminate Zambia)
  • Gabon is eliminated with a loss at Morocco
  • South Africa is eliminated with a loss to Burkina Faso OR a draw to Burkina Faso AND Senegal-Cape Verde does not end in a draw (South Africa is currently up 3-0 at the half)
  • Senegal is eliminated with a loss at Cape Verde or a draw at Cape Verde AND a Burkina Faso win/draw at South Africa
  • Ghana is eliminated with a loss at Uganda (currently 0-0 at the half)

By the way, the methods for how teams are split into the pots are changing this year. Teams are now placed into pots based on their October FIFA rankings, except for the hosts, which are automatically placed into Pot 1.

The FIFA rankings have not been updated yet (I'm assuming they will once qualifying is over), but based on who has qualified so far and their current FIFA rankings, Pots 1 and 2 look like this:

Pot 1
  • Russia - host
  • Germany - 1
  • Brazil - 2
  • Belgium - 4
  • Spain - 11
  • Mexico - 14
  • England - 15
  • Iran - 25
Pot 2
  • Japan - 40
  • South Korea - 51
  • Saudi Arabia - 53
Obviously these will shift as additional teams qualify, and once the rankings are updated. For your reference, the US is currently ranked 28th. For shits and giggles, I've predicted the qualifying teams based on current standings and games remaining, and using the current FIFA rankings, have the following pots put together:

(you may note, as I mentioned in a previous post, Chile and Argentina are in MAJOR trouble)
