2018 Roster Discussion

I just saw the news about Jack. To tell you guys the truth Binget-Villa-Medina + GAM is a lot better than Medina-Villa-Jack. Not that I wouldn't miss him but this is probably the best move for both parties.

You actually know Binget and Medina and their leagues enough to make that call? Why don’t you work for the team?

Does this mean they are going to have to reshoot the #EtihadNYCFC commercial?

If anything wouldn't it help the campaign or something. Look, Jack Harrison is now in the Premier League. We can show the ad in England and people in know who he is, right?

Updated. Looks like we're doing pretty well. Would like to see a backup LB, CM and CB. It's just housekeeping at this point. And look how young we got!

Some thoughts on this...
- Can Medina play LW?
- Don't think Lewis is a LW player. Always seen him on the right.
- Push Tinnerholm up to RW and play Abdul-Salaam at RB?
- We need another Herrera/Ring type midfielder
- Maybe another cheap CB too

What in God’s green earth makes you think a RB is a better option than one of the 4000 new wingers we signed?

But yes, we need a starter caliber midfielder. Like 80% of us have been on about this for ages.

Lewis has one of his best performances coming in from the left. LAG.

We could use a CB. If we don’t, no biggie.

Jack was our second highest scorer but let's not forget his production fell off towards the end of the season. Him and Rodney slumping is the reason we limped into the playoffs and ultimately were one and done again. We sell Jack, best case scenario Medina, Berget, Tajouri work out well and we have a good chunk of GAM to use for the long term. Worst case, the aforementioned players aren't getting the job done we use the GAM in the summer window for offensive help.

You mean from the left against Galaxy. I don’t think he played on the right every time he started

When Lewis started games it was on the left and his best game against LAG was on the left....

Yes. I have no idea why I typed the wrong direction. Obviously meant to counter what was said.

In the current transfer market world, especially England’s landscape, $6M is a crap offer. Harrison is English, personable, interviewable, on their youth national team, has shown remarkable improvement in 1+ (Healthy) season under Vieira, and has a huge upside if CM is where Vieira sees his future. He really should be getting bigger offers from better teams, and another season playing next to Villa will only help his stock.

This offer is not in line with the international offer scale.

American - $5-$6M
English (to PL) - $8M
Brazilian/Argentine - $12M

Yea but GAM is really unproven at this level. I've watched tape on him and I don't know if he will fit in at this level...

All kidding aside, GAM is only as good as how it's used. Maybe they break it off into $75k Kit-Kat pieces and trade it away for international spots.

I think we have to get used to the idea of selling off our young players as they mature. If we’re getting big transfer fees and it gives us a competitive advantage over other teams in the league without as much young talent, then that’s the correct plan. We’re not a final destination league. But we’re also not a bottom tier league. Buy low, sell high. Circumvent the cap. It’s what we praised Atlanta for doing, let’s do it too.

Exactly, but the moves should make sense with a legit fee ($6M is low for Harrison) and the right destination for the player. He’s gonna rot at stoke and soon be a Championship player which is not what he warrants.

Jack seems like a good kid, but it’s not our problem where he goes, if he wants to go there. If he wants to play in China and they offered us $10mm, do it. He’s an adult who makes his own decisions. And furthermore, we don’t want to be seen as a team that medels with a player’s choice of destination “for their own good”.

As for the money, $6mm for a player that looked slow & tired towards the end of a 34 match season and didn’t exactly light the league up with his goal scoring. Let’s take it. We’re not being honest with ourselves if we imagine a $20mm transfer offer next season.

Do you know how many MLS players have been transferred to the PL for over 5 million? The answer is zero. If we get 5 million for Jack, it would be the second richest outbound transfer in MLS history.

Lets also remember that any transfer fees higher than $6m is not going to impact us from a roster-perspective (unless the scenario I laid out in an earlier post can come true, which I'm not sure MLS will allow).

I disagree with you on that. It’d be one thing if Jack was a mercenary we brought in to the club in the middle of his career, but he started his professional journey under the NYCFC umbrella and PV’s tutelage, so I do believe the club owes him the counseling that points out Stoke is a shit move for his development and career.

Jack looked slow and tired last season because he never got a break. Even the best players in the EPL get rotations out to recharge. Our club didn’t have anybody on the roster, save for Lewis, to take up his minutes, so holding his decline in endurance against him is unfairly painting him into a corner.

And nobody every said anything about $20m next year, but $6m is a joke of an offer for him. The point shouldn’t be that we’ll max out the GAM with this transfer (because the MLS Transfer rules are going to change soon), but rather it’s setting a low bar for a player with value to a particular league - being English, and on their youth team, adds tremendous value to Harrison, and taking the offer from the first EPL club that comes along is shortsighted by the club. I’m all for being a Buy low/sell high club, but being smart about it is paramount.

Are you saying Jack Harrison, a professional footballer who has played the game his whole life and grew up in the ManU academy, is unaware of what he faces if he takes a job at stoke? And we know better than he does, or CFG?
