both villa and maxi were over 30 when they arrived. i think villa was 33? maxi was 32?

if we can find a proven player willing to come at 28, that's essentially the mid/tail end of his peak years, that'd be amazing. even if they aren't DP level.. proven players in their peak are also welcome. like with chanot and callens, for example. we need more veterans

Yeah, Villa and Maxi's ages are specifically why I set the upp range at 33, both proved to have a considerable amount left in the tank. Given that as you say 28 is fully someone's peak its always going to be hard to get impact DPs like that and I think its worth being open to slightly older players if if gets you a more talented player.

Totally agree with you on the non-DP front, we talk a lot about the tactical holes in our roster but I do think some of our struggles come from our roster just being too young. The front office had success with a youngish roster the year we won the cup and now they've just gone all in on the youth movement. We need some vets for stability. Ideally, guys like Chanot and Callens when they joined but at this point I think even 1-2 old MLS vets like Tony Roacha would be a helpful presence in the locker room even if they don't play much.

Villa was 33 and he was extraordinarily productive for us, considering that he scored 18, 22 and 23 goals in his first three seasons, when he was almost never injured, and 14 in his last season, dealing with some injuries at age 36.

Obviously we have a U22 spot that people here and around the league are ear marking for our striker. But does anyone know how much GAM and TAM we have stored up? Obviously it’s pretty secretive and no real number is published anywhere. But can anyone with any level of certainty say whether we have a lot or alittle of either of them for signing a non-U22 player

It's very hard to track and a lot is never disclosed. Recently I stumbled upon someone who purports to track it for the Sounders. He seemed to have all sorts of info that isn't widely reported, like how much extra GAM/TAM etc a team gets for all sorts of contingencies. I can't find it again. I remember Sounders twitter fans seemed to have faith in him. But I don't know of anyone who does it for any other team.

IIRC adam tried to do it for NYCFC years ago and abandoned it not because of the work but because there were too many data holes to make the project meaningful.

In 1280 minutes in 2016 (19 GP, 15 GS), Lampard had 12 goals and 3 assists. If he didn't pickup that injury while at Man City, he would have been a great signing for maybe 3 years. Or if he never went to Man City, he would have been a great signing.

I will concede the point about Lampard, although I remember a few of his goals being ricochets off his butt or his gut, but what I remember most from Pirlo is the wasted corners and free kicks, the slowing the game down for no discernible reason (unlike Maxi's savvy tempo setting) the over thinking and losing the ball on our own half, and in general a great perplexity vis-a-vis what Pirlo had seemed at Juve six months prior and what we had received. The fact that he would sub off in favor of Mikey Lopez and the team would look slightly improved (although not aesthetically), and just a general irritated perplexity with him. The supporting cast was poor and I am surely biased, but I cannot change my memories. Sorry Pirlo.

Yeah, he was done by then. Not up to it anymore mentally or physically, while Herrera was a strong up and comer.

And there was another up and comer who subbed in for Pirlo that year who is showing very well these days.

His performance was certainly uneven. I don't know what his problem was on set pieces. I think he was savvy with his distribution, but I can't really rate his defensive contributions, and I suspect they were mediocre.

I tried to look up older stats on ASA, as they have some great resources for a deeper dive into things, but I couldn't figure out how to access earlier season.

Giakoumakis took himself out on a non-contact leg injury. No reports yet but it looked like absolutely nothing when it happened and those are often very very bad. I can't even say I think it had something to do with the bad fake turf.

I agree, always good to see Philly lose. I think that their fans thought after CCL they’d rocket straight to the top of the league.

el trafico last night was a fun game to watch. rarely disappoints and this one at the rose bowl with over 80k fans... seemed like a peek into what MLS could be in the distant future with larger SS stadiums.
