MLS - March 9 - Portland (Home - YS)

Bakrar had like 3 or 4 ridiculous chances in the first half -- if he finishes any of them, we win this game easily. So on some level, the blame on Cushing is a little unfair -- the striker has to finish those chances.

But on every other level, Cushing had a horrible, horrible day. I hate how he sets this team up sometimes. He gets so enamored with the fringe Homegrown players who should not have major roles.

Why is Jasson starting? He's a nice player, but he's a low-skill forward. He, under no circumstances, should be starting over Julian Fernandez or Agustin Ojeda. I understand Fernandez had a rough game on Opening Day. He should still get another chance. Maybe Ojeda isn't ready to give 60 minutes. Can he give 45 minutes? I'd rather 45 minutes of Ojeda over 90 minutes of Jasson.

The the first sub is Justin Haak. He replaces an attacking player. Insanity. It's a 1-0 game, we can't absorb pressure for 30 minutes. That's asking us to concede the goal.

Why did we stop attacking in the 2nd half? We know a second goal kills the game, but we decide not to go for it. Nick gave lip service after the game to the idea that he didn't want the team to sit back in the 2nd half, but we all have eyes and understand what we're watching. If he didn't want the team to sit back and absorb pressure, then why did he set them to do it -- then put on a third defensive midfielder to double-down on it?

To fire the coach three games into the season would be admitting a mistake that we shouldn't have kept him after last season. Personally, I don't think he gets fired until April or May if things remain bad, but no longer deserves to be our coach. He's just not at the level. And the players are starting to see it, too.

That is a damning quote for Cushing. One of the team leaders publicly criticizing him. His time is running short.

This team is so dysfunctional right now.
Martinez is the oldest, most experienced offensive player we added since last summer. He should have been plug'n'play. Or he should have been someone capable of that. He has played 33 minutes in 13 possible games. Thiago has more games and minutes played with NYCFC in 2023-24 than Martinez. What is the point of Martinez? Do Lee and Cushing talk about what types of players are needed and can help? Or does Lee just wing it without even checking with Nick who then has players delivered and then he tells Lee he doesn't want to play them? Because Fernandez, Ojeda and Mijatovic also don't start and play limited minutes. Bakrar plays the most and either fails or is not given the help he needs.

We're barely different from the team we were before the break last year and added all these parts. If anything our defense might be worse.

Honestly we should have won this game, even with Cushing's tactics. I agree Portland outplayed from about minute 40 on, but we did more in the first 40 than Portland did all game. We had more shots, 2x shots on goal and 2x big chances.

FWIW, live, I thought Bakrar was on for his disallowed goal, but I don't have high confidence in my judgment of that. I can't believe they showed 0 replays on the broadcast . Even if none of them were definitive, let us see.

Yep, we have like 85 forwards and no fullbacks.

Seriously -- for a team that plays through its fullbacks, we have O'Toole, Ilenic, and Gray. Gray screws up every attacking move he's a part of. Ilenic is a liability defensively, and O'Toole is just a guy. we have no starting-level fullbacks and a full roster so no way to get any without offboarding someone.

We have enough talent to win games, and we should absolutely be better than 0-3-0 with a -4 GD through three games, but there are still some roster construction issues at play here.

Option 3: Lee and Cushing have little to no say as CFG is picking these players or providing the club a very limited list of players to choose from. We finished the season poorly and were promised moves to turn things around, particularly on the offensive end, the only move we got that fits that promise is Wolf. We now have 3 super young, high-upside prospects in Fernandez, Ojeda and Mijatovic, none of whom look anywhere close to being ready to make a real impact. They all just sat behind Jasson on the bench for the 3rd game of the season. I know they are young and new but you are telling me none of them have shown enough so far in practice to earn a start 3 games into the season at home?

If they bust we wasted all our Taty money. If they pan out they will be gone before they can make much of an impact. Given what we have seen so far nothing about those signings of Fernandez, Ojeda and Mijatovic makes sense to me beyond CFG wanted them stashed in their system and our roster was the one chosen to dump them on. Send them to Man City B or whatever their youth squad is called and give us some players that are ready to play.

We paid $8.7M for Mijatovic and all the kid did today was come in and try 3 different times to draw the most pathetically soft flopping fouls ever and then he legit looked like he got irate with the ref for not giving them to him. He was embarrassing.

We have McFarlane.. a true left back. Young yes but give him a rub. Otoole is serviceable but he's hit his ceiling

I agree Cushing can’t take all the blame, but I I think he deserves a bulk of it. We are 1 point ahead and he thinks of starting to switch in defensive guys. How about defending the lead by getting more goals? I thought the team was doing good the first half. Yes they missed opportunities but at least they were controlling the game and ATTACKING. Then Cushing made those changes and I remember hearing the announcer say those are risky moves, understanding the motive to defend the lead. The game went downhill from that moment on. They saw it the moment he made those changes, Cushing sent the signal, play defense. Idiot

when will we actually see the millions of dollars of investment on the field from the start? Where is Ojeda? As I recall they threw down a few million for him too?

This was areal frustrating game. To see them start so good and felt they could actually win, the watch it just melt away

I was going crazy at his shenanigans, but is it a 18 yr old desperately trying to have some impact because he thinks he deserves more than 15 minute cameos and going about it the wrong way?

Fully agree with all of this. I understand those guys haven't had a full preseason and are still building up, but Jovan has appeared in all three games. We spent $25 million on transfers in the last two windows. We can't have (almost) all of it starting on the bench.

The end of that game was completely avoidable. We are so much better than that.

It's comical at this point.

seriously. i can understand being positive about the first 45 mins... but to say it was the best we've played in the last 4-5 years??? that's delusional.

based on this press conf.. sounds like he's blaming the players for going flat in the 2nd half. it wasn't his direction at halftime or during the 2nd half (he says).

seems like the overall theme is "we are young and we're growing together. can't build a championship team overnight." if this is the theme and he's saying it to the press like this, he's obviously been allowed to say these things by CFG. all the more reason i think he doesn't get fired until the end of the season if we still suck. he's gonna get a full season to "grow and develop" the young squad.

Are they on the bench because Cushing is choosing not to play them or because they are 18 years old and most of them have very limited professional appearances and they are not ready? Plenty of things to blame Cushing for but I haven't seen anything in their admittedly very limited appearances this season to indicate that any of the 18 year old trio are ready to be impact MLS level players.

It's very possible they deserve to be on the bench right now and that's on Lee/CFG, not Cushing. We have also historically moved very slowly these types of players so it is also possible there is a mandate from the higher ups to go slowly with the new CFG lottery tickets.

cushing press conf. at the start, he said the first 45 mins we played the best we have in the last 4-5 years? wtf is he smoking?

Jesus Nick. It’s that kind of thing that solidifies my belief he is more of a corporate salesman than a football manager.
He is flipping absurd.

The head coach throwing his players under the bus second week in a row. That’s bad. To me that means he’s already gone. Question is how long will it take for the FO/CFG to identify and install his replacement.

His statement that he didn't want to go defensive in the 2nd half is complete bullshit. If he didn't want to go defensive, why did he take off an offensive player for Justin Haak?

He knows he's in trouble. The front office/CFG have splashed $25 million in transfer fees alone the last 9 months. They didn't do that for an 0-3-0 record. I think he gets until the five-game homestand in April/May. If we still suck then, I don't know how they keep him.

Dome Torrent was once one bad result from getting canned -- he was able to turn it around, and Cushing can turn it around too. Because this team is far too talented to be 0-3-0.
