Neymar officially opts out of Copa America and chooses to play the Olympics.

it begins and may set a precedent for other players....i also keep reading James wanting to go to olympics as well. the next couple of weeks will be telling since i think lists will start being finalized mid May.

My guess is he chose the olympics because they are in Brazil and it's nice to be home. No way is Olympic soccer bigger then the Centenario glory.

add to that that brazil never won the gold in the olympics

Also, add in the fact that this version of Copa American Centenario is a bit contrived with the arbitrary addition of the North American teams. I could see some players viewing it as less historic due to the deviation of the typical Copa America format. I'm not saying I agree but I could see some SA players potentially using it a justification not to participate.

CONCACAAF teams play regularly in Copa America. Mexico was the runner up in 2001. US even got 4th place in 1995.

My mistake, isn't there something different about this year? Is it just that it's the first time held outside of SA?

true, some may...but others wont i guess depending on the player and national team...well find out who is taking it more seriously by the time lists come out. some may want rest before facing the WCQ in the fall which can start showing which teams are contenders for Qualifying or not.

has anyone been to the FANHQ events? i got an email about RSVP to the one in nyc ....i got two tickets ( they are free) but i dont know what usually happens in them. its at terminal 5 and its the day before the final.

Neither do I, but I'll wager a guess that it involves a lot of "brand synergy" and sponsored swag, with possibly the occasional Soccer Personality contributing to the brand synergy while wearing sponsored swag.

if i get freebies or samples of stuff ill be ok with it.

The Terminal 5 event appears to already be "sold out", mere hours into the first day of pre-sale. Or, at least, the tickets they're calling "Free - Copa Ticket Buyer".
