New Jersey - Postmatch

YEAH BABY!!!

Exciting and scrappy game. Happy to get the win.

Domè set us up to at least not get crushed and we managed to snatch a win with no strikers. Hard to be disappointed. The guys took to the 4-2-3-1 well, but I'm shocked that Domè started and stuck with Maxi as the #9. Obviously it wound up paying off, but still an odd choice.

Also, "Seven Nation Army" has made an appearance in the stadium in the form of "goooo back to New Jer-seyyyy" and I approve.

Maxi-Maxi (which means very very important)
Callens-Ditto

Medina-better than usual
Mata—welcome back

Isi-off night but didn’t see enough of the ball

SJ-looked a little ragged IMHO

Wallace—Ran hard but to little effect
Ofori and Sweat— scared the daylights out of me.

Ibeagha—NA

Dome—good job on the subs and killing the game.

Random thoughts:

Amazing set piece for a change that pinged around 4 guys ending with Chanot barely missing wide.

Medina looked good for a change and scrappy instead of soft.

Sweat kicked a howler on that cross and redeemed himself crushing that RB shot and then taking the ball away.

Maxi is earning his DP money

This is really Ring’s team - Villa dragged the team to this year, but Ring is a 110% leader on the field never giving up on a play or complaining.

Lewis’ first touch was a back heel flick to open up our most dangerous shot all game prior to the goal. If he’d only later on another play had a slightly better flick past Tim Parker, he’d have been in on goal.

Tim Park is RB’s most valuable signing this season - without him their defense would be a mess.

The RB defense is beyond afraid to be on he ball and kick it out or long every chance they get - they can’t handle pressure.

Ofori showed more grit than any other match - gotta keep that intensity.

I’m flabbergasted by some of those offsides called on us - didn’t look so in the stadium and wonder if the pitchside seats linesman simply couldn’t fathom that Maxi was faster than Parker every time.

Mata came in for a 30min stint and could barely run at 90min Mark when having to track back on defense. He’s got a serious fitness problem that his WC injury would not have caused (two weeks off is not gonna hurt overall stamina).

Chanot looked like he either broke his hand or wrist from the way he was holding it - maybe just a sprain, who knows tonight, but it looked bad in the first half.

I was waiting for Tinny to Viking any number of RB players and bite their ear off. His intensity when getting hacked down is awesome and love his attitude getting in players faces.

The TIFO was well done Third Rail, that’s was a massive slam.

And the Go Back to New Jersey chant was doubly Lit!!!

ETA: first time ever against RB that we weren’t stubborn and tried to play out of the back, and we easily broke their press nearly every time.

He was immense defensively. And that seemed to be his instructions.

He doesn’t bring much to the attack, admittedly. But he kept Sweat from being total ass.
That is to say, Sweat was good in defense tonight. Like better than ever by far. Can’t help but see that was he and Wallace working together to be total shithouses.

(Of course, he was terrible in attack. But c’est la vie and shit)

Ofori ain't the answer
I thought Ofori was really good at circulating the ball and handling some horrendous balls played to him.

I think there are too damn many people overlooking the value of a good circulator who can calm possession, ride a tackle, complete a pass when shit is getting tense.

Forgot to list in my prior post, but holy hell, what’s the deal with random club & country jerseys at the match?!?!? I saw the following:

Sweden (Ibra)
Scotland
England
Mexico
Nigeria
USA - multiple iterations
Croatia
Spain (not Villa)
France
LAFC (with matching hat)
ManU
Chelsea (Lampard)
Aston Villa -wtf, seriously?!?
AC Milan
Multiple Mexican Clubs that I couldn’t keep straight
Liverpool
And a few others I can’t remember but was thinking wtf.....

I don’t understand the inclination to wear a non-relevant kit to a match just to show you’re a “true” soccer fan

Not a pretty offensive performance up until Lewis once again showed he can make magic happen at any time. Hopefully Villa is back in the mix Wednesday. We really struggled for time and space up front without the work that he and Berget can put in. Full credit to our defensive effort though, we made a good team look pretty toothless.
