New York Cosmos surive & move to Coney Island

Man. We all saw this coming, but it's still pretty shocking. Doesn't matter how you feel about the Cosmos and their fans. Losing a noteworthy team and probably an entire league is bad for all of US soccer.

I'm sure the bigger teams in NASL will fold into USL. And hopefully we'll get some clarity on D2/D2 in the coming weeks. I'm REALLY interested in the state of the San Francisco Deltas at this point. It seems like they are doing some progressive things, but obviously did a pretty bad job at vetting the NASL when they entered. Hopefully they are USL bound.

This.

But I'm not sure this. In fighting between leagues within US soccer isn't necessarily good. A more unified front with collaboration between leagues for the betterment of all might be quite healthy.

I totally agree. But an entire league/division evaporating overnight is terrible for the image of soccer in America.

Can't post the tweet because I'm at work, but it looks like the Cosmos are going down and the NASL is going down with it. All other stable teams are looking to land in USL as soon as this year.

Are we really 0-2-0 all time against them, forever to remain? Ouch.

As for the other teams, I hope they all land on their feet.

I'll predict Indy, Jacksonville, and Carolina are locks to move to USL smoothly. Puerto Rico too if USL will have them. I think SF Deltas will probably carry on and play in USL.

Edmonton will go to CPL once launches, I hope they do USL until then rather than hiatus, but there's a chance of the latter.

Rayo OKC will take a year off and relocate to either Omaha (hopefully) or Vegas.

Ft. Lauderdale has a decent chance to be rescued, but that process may also require a year of hiatus to be sorted out.

Which leaves Miami FC. I bet they fold. They're one of the more ideological ownership groups, and I'm sure the USL (slash MLS) wants to clear the path for Beckham, so they'll let them die rather than take them in.

NASL was trying to prove a point and they failed. Well actually, they proved MLS' point that restraining salaries in a market in which soccer is not in the top 10 of sport's popularity is smart and necessary. What did Poku get again? 400k?

Kind of funny, since didn't MLS try to get the cosmos to join MLS before NYCFC started? Guess that gamble didnt pay off./

Not so sure they tried to get the Cosmos. They were looking for an NYC team, and most likely held discussions with the groups behind the Cosmos, but the Cosmos never had the ability to get into MLS. From what I understand, they balked at MLS' $100m fee because they did not have the money and went to the lower cost NASL. Once the Cosmos were taken over by the criminal enterprise of Sela Sport, no way on earth was MLS going to let that group into the league.
My guess is that MLS may have had discussion with people behind the Cosmos, and were open to accepting them into the league if they could find suitable investors. They didn't, but MLS did find a qualified group who had no need or interest in the Cosmos brand. Now we have a great club, and the Cosmos brand has been further diminished.

They did. MLS was unsatisfied with their bid (apparently Cosmos did not want to pay the whole expansion fee and wanted control of their brand) and while Cosmos were trying to reorganize, CFG came in and took the spot.

If you go by what the Cosmos' biggest fanboy Leo always touted (regarding the $100M fee), it was that the team *definitely* had the money, but they would rather invest it in the "Team" rather than cough it up to the League. I have no idea how much their yearly operating costs were, but they operated for only 4 years/3.5 seasons, so they either blew through money or they were completely miserly while talking a big game.

I feel bad for people losing their team and I feel bad for the players/employees, but I don't feel bad for ownership since they apparently learned absolutely nothing from history.
