NYCFC Sign Alexandru Mitrita

I am on board with the signing so long as DJ Mode plays this video’s background music before every match.

Now that's a fuckin highlight reel. The guy takes the ball down in a crowded area, jukes a guy and has the composure to find a space to poke it in. They aren't all wonder goals, but they are on target bouncy with some pace, could be goals in any league. Only 1 goal in that package was a tap in. Can't stand a highlight reel where the guy is on the end of a cross in the box standing by himself. This guy looks like he is willing to take the 1 or 2 touches to find a shot. I like it.

After a few hours on Twitter, I’ve come to the conclusion that Mitrita was a bad signing for the following reasons:

1) his scoring record from ages 16-21 in Europe, including a Serie A season was poor.

2) NYCFC has made bad signings in the past, so this one is probably bad, and

3) Fans are comparing him to Giovinco and the last player that fans compared to Giovinco turned out to be nothing like Giovinco. He was the team MVP last year, but not in a Giovinco-like way.

Bummer because I was getting excited.

One notable thing from the highlight reel is that the romanian league appears to be very physical and Mitrita clearly has no issues dealing with contact. His shirt gets pulled and he gets pushed multiple times in that video yet still finishes the play. It made me optimistic that he will do well in the MLS. Now he just has to adjust to substantially better goalkeeping because the other takeaway from the video is that Romanian league goalkeepers are terrible.

As to the Romanian League, let's remember that a couple of our stars are from Luxembourg and Finland. Romania is a powerhouse compared to those countries, and the Romanian league surely is better than the domestic leagues in Luxembourg and Finland (which is probably why Ring and Chanot weren't playing in their domestic leagues). Also, not that long ago, in the late 80s and early 90s, Steua Bucharest used to go toe to toe with the big boys in UEFA Champions League etc. and did it with Romanian players only. Belodedici, Petrescu, Lacatus were amazing, besides Hagi of course. What I mean is that Romania is not Brazil, but it has a tradition of producing good players, and our Mitrita was tearing up the Romanian league, so there's cause for optimism.
