Crazy that a good portion of the Timbers team played the bulk of overtime thinking that they were advancing had the score held.
Didn’t they have the Away Goal tiebreaker (2-1) which would have come into effect since each team scored 4goals and each won a match? What am I missing that sent it to PKs?

“Assorted Timbers players celebrated as though they had won the series at the end of extra time, with the series tied 4-4, on the presumed assumption they thought their goal in extra time gave them the edge courtesy of the away goals tiebreaker. But away goals do not count in extra time of a playoff series in MLS.”

Confusing but I guess it makes some sense given the extra away goal opportunity afforded by extra time.

That makes logical sense, I guess..... so how does the UEFA Champions League handle it?

There's a split on whether away goals rule applies in extra time. I can't imagine why it every would - applying away goals in extra time gives too much of an advantage to the visiting team.

Kind of amazing that Portland's players didn't know the rule. Pretty basic stuff, and its on their coaching staff for not making that clear.

It's pretty much universal that the away goals rule doesn't apply in extra time. That would give too much of an advantage to the visiting team.

Doesn’t the home team have the advantage of the crowd? Familiar confines? Being the higher seed/figuratively the better team per record?

well UEFA does it with champions league so fans probably applying rules here. Interesting is i think CCL does not have away goals applied in extra time. Though it is true staff should of looked up rules to make sure.

Yeah. I just watched the DVR, and that is the damnedest thing I’ve seen in a match.

But you get how it happens. The people that know the rules presume everyone does, and the people that don’t know don’t know they don’t know. But it makes you wonder what the hell they thought the tactics should have been.

I think this is what is then seen as the advantage of being the higher seed and playing second. That if it does go to extra time, you get half an hour more at home. If you were to apply the away-goals tiebreaker to goals scored in extra time, that would heavily weight it in the other direction IMO.

Sporting KC vs Portland Timbers it is. Should be fun.
If there's one thing we've learned over the years it's not to count out teams. At the moment, RSL only needs 2 goals to win the series. Still winnable for them.
However, I do think we'll end up seeing SKC vs Timbers lol
