Leagues Cup - August 5 - Toluca (YS)

Considering Toluca just won the Clausura and all that jazz, this was a good result for us - I know a lot of people who thought it was going to be a 5-0 blowout.

Their second goal was... wtf?

Our play is looking good again. Nico is the real deal, he had some really good ideas and was linking up with Alonso really nicely.

The ref was a joke. Usually I laugh at the "the ref sucked" at every ref people, but... this was atrocious. The man could not keep hold of the game in the first half - that fight was 100% because the ref did not know how to control the game. No cards until that point? There were some nasty challenges before that point, too. Second half was more civil but still the ref... man. I hope he learns from this.

Alonso's goal was a beauty with a nice assist from Ojeda.

Alonso's shoulda-been was fantastic team play with a sublime assist from Fernandez.

Woulda been nice for both those guys to have goal contributions in the same match.
So close. If Alonso gets over that one just a little more, we maybe come out of this one with a 2-2 draw, which would have been a fantastic result against these guys. They were the better side last night, and not by a little.

That being said, I'm looking forward to facing them again. We gave a hell of a good account of ourselves despite being undermanned. At full strength and with a complete roster, it's "let's get it ON" time.

Stole my thunder, bro. Came on to say the same.
I can only add (also as others have said) their 2nd goal was mind boggling and the way the match ended was also a joke.

This. Or at least it was very strange.

Also, what are the card guidelines for putting an opposing player in a headlock?

I'd also think Tana and the player he head butted should both have gotten reds.
Then after it finally calmed down, someone smacked Maxi in the face with an open hand. It wasn’t hard, but it was clear and deliberate and set Maxi off again. There’s a chance it was kind of playful or friendly, but Maxi clearly didn’t take it that way, and any contact to the face or head is an instant red. Did anyone see that?

I only saw the aftermath of Maxi being angry, but I think the auto red for contact to the face is an MLS rule. I assume League's Cup officials have more discretion.
