U.S. Soccer Pitches CONMEBOL on Joint 2020 Tournament

https://www.si.com/soccer/2019/02/26/us-soccer-conmebol-2020-tournament-concacaf-cordeiro

Basically the Copa America Centenario every 4 years.

I hope it happens.

So 4 year schedule would look like this:

2019 Gold cup (determines conf cup participant)
2020 Super Copa America
2021 WC Qualifying & Conf Cup
2022 World Cup

Rinse & repeat. I can dig it. It also means 6 straight years with major tournaments on US soil between 2023-2028 (GC, SCA, CC, WC, GC, SCA).

They said the 2020 one might be a one-off, so it might just be a one-time thing.

Sadly, it seems that the Confederations Cup might be going the way of the Do Do Bird.

Would there still be a second Gold Cup in the 3rd year of the cycle? I think so.

Then, there is also Concacaf Nations League, which is our response to UEFA's Nations League.

Given how much harder it is becoming to get quality games outside of our region, we could really use this event on a regular basis.

Hmm. I didn’t realize that. This article says it 1. Shifting World Cup to winter screwed it up for 2021. And 2. With low ratings, it could be replaced by an expanded Club World Cup. (I wonder how that would work with MLS’s Summer schedule). https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&sou...aw0qpw436OKLcmcDk-LSzqgy&ust=1551365590587792

The Concacaf nations league is really a tournament! Not a league. It starts with all the teams who didn’t play in the hex, having four matches to see which 6 teams join the hex teams into 4 groups of 4. Then only 1st place teams in each group advance to a 4 team bracket. Basically a gold Cup with a group stage to run from September to March. Doesn’t sound like a league to me.

so is this fifa approved? conmebol has another copa america next year. not sure how they gonna allow this to happen with the best squads.

lol damn these players get no summer rest. this is too much, two gold cups concacaf nations league, WCQ and now this?

Just read the NY Times article on this.

Seems the real impediment is that Conmebol has been intending to move the Copa America to the even years opposite the World Cup - beginning in 2020. So, that would put the Copa America in conflict with this potential joint tournament of the Americas. Will be interesting to see how it shakes out, but I can't imagine that the two sides won't find a way to fit it all in.

I thought this would replace copa America for that iteration

Well, they are doing a Copa America this summer (2019) and had said they were then going to start on the other 4-year cycle in 2020. So, maybe they replace it for that year. But, it seems that the real idea is to do the Copa Both Americas on a regular basis, which would mean that Conmebol has to decide.

so apparently conmebol said thanks but no thanks. there was a rumor even before this news came out, that SUM and USSF copyrighted the "Copa America" name in the US behind conmebol's back and obviously they did not like that so maybe thats why the said no to this proposal.
