2021 Schedule Thread

Of the 17 MLS Regular Season matches in 2021, how many will be played at Yankee Stadium?

MLB Post-Season Schedule is out. This is of interest regarding the October games at Red Bull Arena that might get moved to Yankee Stadium.
  • Oct 3 - Nashville - The Yankees play their final regular season game at home this day; this game was never getting moved.
  • Oct 23 - DC - Same day as ALCS Game 7. Yankee Stadium will be available:
    1. if the Yankees are the "visiting" team in the ALCS; or
    2. if the Yankees don't make the ALCS; or
    3. if the ALCS ends in 5 games or fewer.
  • Oct 27 - Chicago - Same day as World Series Game 2. Yankee Stadium will only be available if the Yankees do not advance to the World Series.
The above takes into account the 3-day rule.

The above does not take into account lead time the Club might think it needs to accommodate ticket sales. It also doesn't take into account any strange field preparation the Yankees might think they need for the World Series, which was an issue a couple of seasons ago.

Didn't the Yankees declare the Stadium off-limits to NYCFC as long as the Yankees were in the playoffs in previous years? I don't think the 72-hour rule comes in to play.

Even then I assume the club would prefer Citi Field which is more likely to be available given how the mets are playing... and they'll have WAY more fans come to citi field than to RBA.

I don't think the Yankees have ever said we can't play in Yankee Stadium during the playoffs, although it has never been as simple as the 72-hour rule in the regular season.

In 2017, our October 22 regular season game against Columbus was pre-emptively moved to Citi Field because it was going to fall during the World Series, and the Yankees weren't eliminated until the 21st. This was despite the fact that had the Yankees advanced to the World Series, there would have been 72 hours on either side of the NYCFC game without the Yankees playing at home. IIRC, the Club said the Yankees needed advance time to do special field prep for the World Series, so the field wouldn't be available.

In 2019, our October 23 playoff game against Toronto was pre-emptively moved to Citi Field because it was going to fall during the World Series, and the Yankees weren't eliminated until the 19th. IIRC, the Club said there was not enough lead time to deal with ticket allocations, so they needed to go with the venue they were certain could host the game.

So it seems maybe the rule is we can squeeze games in during MLB playoffs but not the World Series, if the Yankees are in either? I can believe I remembered that well enough to get that part confused.

I think it's very ad hoc. No guarantee on anything when it comes to the Yankees. Still, absent some random playoff rule, I think there is a really good chance the DC game gets moved, as there are good odds that the Yankees won't make the ALCS or if they do would be the visiting team. Both scenarios would give adequate time to set up ticket sales in the stadium.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading in the past that Yankee Stadium is unavailable in October for as long as the Yankees remain in the playoffs. That's why they scheduled those games for RBA, but will move them if the Yankees are eliminated.

We're pretty much on track for what we had last season, almost the same in terms of GF and GA, which is pretty uncanny. We play 3 more games until we get there, but either way we're going to be very similar to last season's numbers. Pretty interesting if you ask me, though I don't really know how to interpret this or if it means anything.

On track for the “we’re right there” trophy just like in years past.

Yup. No games at YS until the Yankees are officially out (and probably with at least a week to spare to change the field).

So I knew we had two HRD in a row but... I didn't even notice this:

If it weren't for Nashville, it would be THREE in a row. That's crazy!!!

ETA - This is specifically referring to home games (and RBA), not away games. We have other games between these but they're away.

OK, we have six home matches left in the regular season. Of those six, only September 25th (NJRB) is at Yankee Stadium until the season finale on November 7th. All our remaining "home" matches are in New Jersey. And I can't even go to the September derby because I'll be away that week. I traded in two matches, so I think I've only been to two home matches this season, plus the one that's not until November. Not even sure why I have season tickets any more. This sucks.

Guess I should've put this in the Vent thread I suppose. Sorry!

Heavy odds that the two late-October home games will get moved to Yankee Stadium with the Yankees flaming out. But yes, this season has sucked with the schedule. Hopefully it's a little better next year when they go back to the normal March start. Having the two games lately moved to RBA has just added insult to injury.

The only silver lining is that from a sporting perspective, the team has been very good at New Jersey this year, so at least it hasn't cost them results.

Yankees are 1 game out of a Wild Card spot with 19 games left in the season. It's coming down to the wire.

I have a real problem with the Yankees this season.

I am a Yankees fan, so normally I root for them to make the playoffs and advance as far as they can - notwithstanding that it hurts my favorite professional team, which is often relocated by that playoff run.

This year's Yankee team has been so maddening, that I am beginning to root for them to fail. All that talent and hope, and such poor performances. And then to tease the fans with a 13-game win streak only to follow it up with losing 12 of 15 (and as I write this, they are down 5-0 at home, in the game that forced the move for tomorrow night's NYCFC game).

As it stands, the best the Yankees can hope for is to make the one-game, crap shoot wild card matchup, probably against the Red Sox, and we all know what a disappointment that will end up being. Best to avoid that humiliation altogether and enter the off season ready to address the serious questions.

Just change all those "Yankees" to "NYCFC" and it kind of reads more or less the same. :-(
