Should be "PEER-lo", with ever so slight of a roll on the R, if I have my Italian pronunciation right (which I probably don't, esp. considering regionalisms, etc).

It's one of those names where there is the correct way of saying, and the way that everyone else says it. It's like Emre Can, the Liverpool player. People debate whether the surname is correctly pronounced Can or Chan, but it's actually Jun. In this circumstance, when the overwhelming majority are saying the name wrong anyway, the alternative in a way almost becomes accepted itself.
