I'm not sure this will help your apps find your files but your best bet is to make a clone. I think Carbon Copy Cloner will let you do a basic clone without having to buy it, and there's also SuperDuper! and ChronoSync, both of which are also excellent and (all three are worth buying and are not expensive). I'm about to rush out the door so I haven't researched it but any of those apps will make an identical clone for you. Not certain that the OS will know whether or not it's not the same drive though, not without checking, which I can do later today.

Thanks. Please check if you can. I have searched for a tutorial or anything on this and cannot find anything. It seems pretty basic but I find nothing. I posted in the Apple Support community and got nothing. I was going to clone (and hope) but before I start I'd really like to know if there are any other steps I should take. The odl drive is starting to wheeze.

Preliminary results are inconclusive as the Carbon Copy Cloner folks more or less answered but didn't quite get what I meant by a linked file. Still investigating.

If you could let me know which apps we're talking about I could probably just do a quick test and see what happens. My guess is linked Photoshop images on the external drive placed in an InDesign file on the internal drive, say, but would rather test your exact scenario if possible.

Thanks. Don't go nuts doing tests. I asked my Facebook friends and got basically the same advice. Clone the drive, don't copy it. Make sure it has the same formatting, and give it the exact same name. Then hope for the best.

It's a variety of applications. Lightroom is the big one. All my Raw files are on this external and Lightroom has its own catalog that points to them in their MacOS finder location. Same for Capture One. Please don't ask why I use both Lightroom and Capture One as there is no good answer. Plus I still have a rusty old copy of Aperture installed that occasionally gets fired up and needs to access the same files. Also my Photos library (the native Mac app -- I use it for family stuff) is on this external. So are my iMovie libraries and iTunes.

So my kids broke one of my televisions playing soccer in the basement (I don't blame them, we have two goals down there and play full-on games). With July 4th sales upon us, I want to find a good deal on a replacement, and also don't want to pay too much given that it may happen again. Anyone have any thoughts on this model considering for this I only care about picture quality and not as much about bells and whistles? It was reduced from 2400 to 1100, which probably means that it is being phased out, etc. which doesn't bother me.

I always tell people’s dont worry about “smart” TVs. It’s a Samsung and it’s 4K. Sounds like the perfect basement TV to last a while.

yup, just NEVER hook your TV up to wifi. you want Netflix, Hulu, etc... Invest in a Amazon stick, Roku, Apple TV, etc.. Plug those in and connect those to your wifi. They will update regularly, the apps will work much better and it will be better protected vs a virus. Also, I'd rather have a $30 amazon stick brick out from a virus than a $2k tv.

Also, if you use HBO, Showtime, Starz or whatever on demand though your cable box. STOP. Get one of the devices mentioned and start using HBO Go, Showtime, etc.. on it. It will give you more choices in shows and movies and run much smoother.

I am having a Nexflix glitch and figured I would see if anyone has a fix. Every time I watch a show, the sound goes out at some point. I then have to exit the show and go back in for the sound to resume. Any thoughts on the problem/solution?

Is the TV you’re running it on still cracked?
