Home - August 24 - Columbus (Postgame)

A win's a win, but lots to improve on. Less long balls and deep defensive line this game, but our lack of creativity and movement is still a jarring difference from last year. It could be match fitness but we haven't had that long off since the tournament, so that doesn't seem THAT likely.

Hopefully this gives us confidence to improve on how we know we can play. We definitely need more creativity in the final third. We cross the ball entirely too much to nobody and crosses in the air are basically wasted opportunities since we don't have the players to capitalize or threaten in the air aside from Taty. If we don't cross and have a 1v1 situation on the wing, we basically end up losing the ball and the attack fizzles. As a team, I wish we'd recognize that we are not full of 1v1 specialists and even if we are, we should be moving to create opportunities. There's nothing easier to defend than a player who stands still, and that's exactly what we do.

Hope sands and medina are ok. hope we can get back to our winning ways. would have been nice if we had won the derby though...

and congrats to us.. our goal total is up to a whopping 2 now. lol

Im quite concerned with what happen to sands he looked like in lots of pain. I didnt see a sequence in the end where he crashed into someone or something. Medina was at least walking, ring i think is ok.

win from mistake but still they had few but dangerous chances even without zelarayan

Am I insane, or did I hear "Let's go, Red Bulls!" from the fake crowd noise multiple times (on YES)?

Also, after about the first 25-30 minutes I'd say this is the best we've played since the restart.

Ring hates us.
i love how we won but there are no celebrations on the forum. yikes.
I’m not sure there’s that many people left to care. Saw a lot of people in the chat say they’re just watching it on their phone or they’re not tuning in to the second half. I wasn’t around for the game since I work late on Monday's but I did check in and that was just what I saw in that span of time.
I’ll have to catch up on the game tomorrow and I’ll read everyone’s thoughts when I get home.

Ring's effort and passion are great, but the team is worse when he plays as an 8 or an advanced midfielder. He scored tonight, but the bulk of credit should go to Heber. Multiple times in the first half Ring scuttled attacking chances - at or near 25 minutes he crossed directly into a defender when he had a ton of space, and at or near 43 minutes he stumbled on his own feet in the box after a great Matarrita pass (and I am sure there are other examples).

If starting Ring and Sands together moves Ring up the pitch it isn't worth it. He has been a dominant 6. Let him be a 6.

I agree. I like him better as a CDM. Not sure why both Deila and Dome wanted to bring him forward so much

Well, I am excited. This was better tonight. Much more effort. Better offensive fluidity. More chances in the attack.

It’s not yet good enough, but it’s a big step in the right direction. Nearly everyone out there stepped up his game. And this was a win against a really good team.

And it’s worth calling out some praise of Medina. He is a different player this year. A lot more effort and a whole lot more toughness. He is challenging for balls, jockeying for position and dealing well with getting bumped and shoved.

It has happened many times before but surely this time it was because of Maxi’s absence? Ring’s tenacity might be the next best solution when Maxi’s mobility and natural passing is not there.

do we know if he was referring to us? I've always been a big Ring fan but he has to play to his strengths and that's being the enforcer. He's not an attacking mid no matter what.

Also - Ronny says Sands suffered a cramp. nothing more. just a really bad cramp.

He also said after the derby loss, alot of the veteran players sat down with him and told him they wanted how they wanted to play. could be a big reason why we saw more of us tonight instead of the trash we saw vs the red bulls. definitely not back to our old selves, but i think that has a lot to do with individual performances as well. heber, tinnerholm, callens for example.. effort is there, but they are not like their 2019 form.

That was unquestionably better than virtually anything else we've played all year. Still not where it needs to be, but better. I loved the pressure and the counterattacking, but it felt like as soon as we got to the top of the box, the ball just got stuck and everything would fizzle out. It feels like there's still a great deal of rust, and guys are still finding their legs. But the effort was certainly there -- the desire was better than any other game we've played, and the goals will come.

YES had an interesting stat during their pregame that we've scored on 8% of our SOG this season -- it was in the 30's each of the previous few seasons. That definitely says to me that either (a) we're not creating as dangerous chances as we used to and/or (b), our luck is sure to start changing now. Probably a little from A and a little from B.

crew seem to be complaining the ref didn't give enough yellows. imho, i thought the ref called the game more against us than for us. there were hard tackles for sure, but that didn't make them fouls.

Also, we really need to give credit to the folks at the team in charge of making it "look and feel" like an NYCFC home game. The signage, the digital boards, everything looked really good. They did a great job making it look seamlessly like an NYCFC home game. Massive kudos, that's not an easy job when it's your actual home stadium, and even less so at your rival's place.

they missed the red bulls tarp on the 2nd level - though that wasn't viewable on TV. the biggest fail was feeding in red bulls chants though. couldn't have been that difficult to get third rail chants could it?

i'm wondering how we would have done against a full power crew side? half the team were subs. yes, we're missing maxi. but even if they had everyone except zelarayan.. would this game have turned out differently? cause that was essentially our best xi aside from no maxi and no taty and isi.

Well, both teams field the best XI they can, and what then happens, happens. Anything else is irrelevant and will be forgotten at the time of the next game.

Yeah that was really weird about the chanting. Someone obviously hit the wrong audio file. It's a good thing they're trying, even if they made a mistake. It was also good that they fixed it in the second half, I didn't hear any Red Bulls chants afterwards. I think we need to go easy on whoever is responsible for that. The backstage people working these games are literally putting their lives at risk to work these games. Let's all cut them some slack right now. We're playing games in a pandemic, and things aren't going to be perfect. We have a pretty good TV crew (not counting the streaming/live issues, the actual productions and commentating are pretty damn solid), so let's cut them some slack while they risk their lives to televise these games.

And you play who you play. We were missing Maxi, surely we're better with him. They also had Zardes, Santos, and their defense has been great all season. It's not like they were playing their full B team. Yes they rested a few guys, and a few others were injured, but we're also missing two starters.
