No, I don't think so. "Commercial activities" in relation to a football team usually means arranging sponsorships.

Back in Week 3 I won the President's Suite contest and watched the Montreal game there. Patricof was supposed to come by and say Hi but it never happened. I covered it all here. I also mentioned that he reached out to me, apologized, gave me his email address and said I should follow up so we could grab a coffee and catch up. Which was good of him to do, but I didn't follow through because it seemed a bit much. I didn't want to leverage a missed 5 minute casual meet for a whole 1 on 1 coffee thing. Then the day after the Queens event 2 weeks ago he emailed me to more directly ask if I could meet him and my STH rep Doug Bennett for coffee in the next few weeks. So I said yes, we worked out the time, and it was first thing this morning in their offices. For an hour.
So that was very cool. It was very nice, very low key and friendly. No surprise that a guy like Patricof has good people skills. I actually was told a few things off the record and I will hold to that, but honestly nothing that I cannot say is all that exciting or detailed.
On substantive stuff and pseudo news:
There are a few employees who do nothing but physical infrastructure including getting a stadium and one of them is basically all stadium. The other 2 split their time between stadium and the training facility. I met 2 of them, including the guy who is the main stadium guy. I wished him luck.
This is not surprisingly the area where he asked me not to broadcast some things. And as I just said, I did not get any real details, but the slightly more specific hints at details I got gave me some assurance that real things are in the works at least. I have no idea of a timeline and no reason to think it's imminent, and no idea where, but also not seemingly never or decades or years after years away. It is a real priority that actual people devote most of their time to, and I don't think they sit around saying too bad we can't actually do anything.
They were slightly surprised but not shocked at my simple declarative statement "everyone hates the food." I think they know but not the extent.
They know their Year 1 communication was terrible. When I said it was pulling teeth to see a press release when they won a game they laughed and nodded. They were pleased to hear that fans recognize the improvement.
They wanted feedback on the Villa contract renewal news. They weren't surprised when I said he was universally loved and an absolute home run and everyone I know is happy he's back another year, but they still need or wanted reaffirmation of that. They seem to know half the fans love Pirlo and think he's our secret ingredient while another half think he's done.
David Lee is the unknown hero of player acquisition. He is the Cap, GAM, TAM, International Slot wizard. So now he can be a little more appreciated.
On that topic, more transparency in MLS is likely coming, as is more flexibility in player pay. Both have been reported elsewhere but it came though here as well.
They think very highly of PV. Of course they say that but it is real and sincere. We talked about how good he is at fan events. He and Villa and their families are very happy in NYC. NYC is an asset for getting players here.
We also talked about the season, the roster, Mata hurt, Harrison developing, Herrera looking good last game, Maxi winning people over, etc., just relaxed conversation about the team. And we discussed my history with soccer etc and becoming a founding member. Patricof said something in that part of the conversation that surprised me. I mentioned that before 1994 I watched little hockey or soccer, but the Rangers Cup run and World Cup in the US led me to both and I happened to notice some basic structural and geometry similarities between the 2 sports. Anyway, this prompted JP to say that soccer has more overlap with hockey fans than the other 3 team spectator sports. I would not have expected that.
It was just a delightful hour and the whole thing could not have been handled better.

That is the most encouraging bit of news I have heard in a long time... aside from Villa's contract renewal of course.

I can't imagine doing that job. Your entire role is regarding the stadium. The only thing you do is about a stadium.
