Malte Amundsen [Defender]

We sat next to each other at the gala in February and chatted throughout the meal. Sweet kid. Not sure why he ended up locked in the doghouse. Wish him the best!

Sorry to see him go. Thought he was fairly solid though inconsistent at times. TBH, not sure cufre is a huge upgrade yet. Hope Nick is right.

Good luck to you malte!

huge ? is yet to be seen. upgrade? yes.

i constantly criticized amundsen for not being able to track back and gets caught constantly when tracking back. Cufre does not really go forward alot so that covers the defensive side., however with wingers and the midfielders seems to cover that side of the field on offense.

A bit of old news now but Malte had a bit of a ITS moment with the crew. He scored 2 goals in his first two games with his new team. That’s one more goal than he scored in all of his time here at NYCFC

Malte is killin' it for Columbus tonight down in Monterrey. Who do we blame for losing him? O'Toole isn't terrible but A) Malte is better and B) we have no depth at that critical position.

Ronnie benched Malte in favor of Gudi. Then Cushing benched him for Otoole. Lee looked at our roster with Malte and O'Toole in 2023 and decided we needed to get Cufre on loan Feb 3rd, 2023 pushing Malte to 3rd on the depth chart. We sold Malte in April of 2023.

Long story short at least 3 different decision-makers at some point looked at Malte and decided he wasn't our guy so I'm not sure who you blame on this one. It's a shame we lost him after seeing the player he's grown into but based on how he played during his time with NYCFC I don't think anyone saw this coming.

I get Gudi over Malte. But not O'Toole. So we split the blame 50/50 on Cushing and Lee?

It never made sense. They brought in Gudi for free in 2020 to sit behind Matarrita. Mata leaves, and in 2021 they pay $1.6M for Malte, who ends up sitting behind Gudi, who's not even a left back primarily. Gudi leaves, and as noted, Malte stays buried on the bench. Then they trade him within MLS and he flourishes on a Cup winning team. Organizational failure.

Also, he flourishes in CLB playing "the city way", because no team in MLS plays "the city way" more than this version of CLB. Nagbe is the ultimate city-style player at an MLS level. We don't even dominate possession anymore, and when we have it, we are plodding and don't know what to do with the ball. So Malte could be our guy, but several coaches failed to see it.

We blame Malte for not locking down the spot when it was ripe for the taking

we asked our outside backs to bomb down the wings constantly. malte does not do this with the crew. he stays deeper most of the time and rarely is the one overlapping onto the wings. clb play a fast paced, possession style that is entertaining to watch, but malte's role with the crew is different than it was with us. there in lies the reason why he seems much better.
