MLS - April 22 - Cincinnati (YS)

Matty Lawrence was mentioning after the match how this team has given away matches after the 85th minute.

But if you look after 9 matches this team has allowed
2 goals within the first five mins of a match
2 goal at the 45 mark or within first half extra time.
6 goals at the 85 mark or later.

O’Toole’s gaff reminds me a lot of Matarrita’s terrible foul on Laryea in the playoffs. I remember thinking how incredibly stupid the foul was. Why go at a guy from behind in the box? I decided that Mata was simply too stupid to play for us any longer.

Of course, Ronald Matarrita didn’t go to Princeton.

It was certainly a bad play and I'm not trying to let Kevin off the hook but at that point we were playing 5 at the back with 3 CBs on the field. Why was there no CB stepping to meet Evander the moment he got by Kevin? The CB positioning and spacing was horrible all night.

Exactly. One of my kids yelled that out last night as if happened. I think getting ‘megged caused him to lose his mind.

Our defending in the box generally has been shaky all season. When did this go from a strength to a weakness? It can’t just be Haak?

I left in the 86’ minute

By the time I pulled out of the parking garage, I was getting texts. Happy I missed it

We need a striker that can hold the ball up and defend free kicks. Would solve a lot of problems.

Raul is a liability, he covers for his lack of positioning discipline with his speed an athleticism but it messes with the shape of the back line. Martin's shades way over to help him leaving multiple players on the backside for Tayvon to deal with. Raul's essentially the Barraza of CBs, if every save or tackle looks heroic something is seriously wrong. Things look more stable when Trewin is next to Martins.

I also think Martins is injured. He never opened up his pace to full stride last night. There were 2-3 instances where a ball went in behind and he would normally just out pace the attacker to the ball but instead he held back and stayed stride for stride with the attacker as they got to the ball and then defended them.

On June 29, 2022, Cincinnati jumped to a 3-0 lead against NYCFC by '30. NYC then scored 4 straight and led 4-3 in minute 52, only to concede the equalizer in '70. Shockingly, neither team scored in the final 20 minutes, though Cincinnati had a possible game winner at '88 reversed by VAR for offsides.
That 4-4 finish and last night are tied for highest scoring NYCFC draw, shared with a July 12, 2015 game against Toronto.

the last 3 games we started with Gustavo instead of Trewin. As gbservis said, Martins may be injured and is not playing 100% the last two games and missed one of the last 3 games entirely. Gray has also been playing every game and may be getting tired and a little complacent, knowing that there's no one taking his starting position. Possibly the same goes for Otoole since Cavallo is the only other left back and he's definitely not high level at the moment.

Our tactics place a heavy load on Gray and O'toole, they play like true wingbacks and basically sprint end-line to end-line the entire game. Most teams that play that way not only sub their wingbacks most games but rotate them heavily during schedule congestion.

We run those guys into the ground, of course they are going to struggle at the end of games especially on short rest.
