MLS - April 4 - St. Louis (CF)

Didn’t parking used to be $25?

Is NYCFC following the FIFA plan? Parking is more expensive than some tickets. Ooooofff.
It's been going up at Citi every year. I think it was $40 last year and $25 sounds right for back when the team first started playing there regularly. I also think the Mets set these prices.
But since we'll be using the Mets parking even with our own stadium this is unlikely to improve. Given how the club is pricing tickets, it would probably not be any better if the club controlled it either.

And they're playing reasonable well despite the record and the opposition.

ASA has their team Goals Added differential at +1.92, ranked 9th in the league and just slightly ahead of us at +1.87.
They also rank 8th in xGD and xPts, while their actual GD and Points rank 20th and T22 respectively.

In sum, their results are lagging far behind their play, which is a stark reversal from their first season and a half, when every shot went in and every opponent gifted them a turnover directly in front of goal. In 2023, St Louis had 56 Points and 44.73 xPts, and their actual GD was almost 19 goals better than the xGD. Oh how the turntables have turned.

If you're wondering, the distance between our Pts and xPts is less than 1, but our actual GD of 7 is more than double our xGD. A lot of the reason those don't line up is we won one game by 5 goals and no matter what you can only get 3 points out of that. The Orlando game was worth 2.89 xPts.
I remember that first season when it was inconceivable how many dumb mistakes and breaks they were getting to score easy breakdown goals. What was even more funny was their (new) fans trying to explain that their press was something MLS hadn’t ever seen before and it was skill that was allowing them to get so many of these goals.

Regression is a rough game sometimes.

How sad.. Should have protected that lead better instead of trying to kill the game. Multiple opportunities to game manage when we were 1 v 5 in our attack toward the end and somehow tried to shoot on goal instead of running the clock out. Gets to a point where it's like WTF?

btw - did you guys know polvara used to be a season ticket holder for NYCFC? *eyeroll

Apr 4, 2026 at 5:35 PM - LionNYC: Saw a guy wearing a Red Bulls kit on the subway going back home before changing for our match. On the way to the subway to the LIRR to the match, a guy said, let’s go NYCFC. So 50/50 day thus far. Let’s get that W. And with some helpful results go top of the east. But it’s cold out there tonight. But I’m just glad NYCFC is back
Apr 4, 2026 at 6:30 PM - Gene: Apr 4, 2026 at 6:43 PM - moogoo: looks like no new faces breaking into the XI. probably cause alternative options are pretty slim.
Apr 4, 2026 at 6:49 PM - Gene: Is Joe doing PBP tonight?
Apr 4, 2026 at 7:22 PM - Gotham Gator: I would guess he’s going to be doing in stadium stuff, but hopefully, you’re right.
Apr 4, 2026 at 7:31 PM - BC19: My first and probably one few games in person this season. Skyscraper running across the field and planting the flag is hystercial
Apr 4, 2026 at 7:32 PM - Gene: No Joe. Williams and Severese.
Apr 4, 2026 at 7:40 PM - Gene: GAME ON!!!
Apr 4, 2026 at 7:47 PM - Kenny: Wolf is completely ineffective.
Apr 4, 2026 at 7:52 PM - LIexpat: Are the cameras for this game on Artemis II , players look tiny in this view
Apr 4, 2026 at 7:59 PM - Gene: Ojeda has to pull the trigger there.
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:13 PM - Marito: Wolf has some value, but he can't dribble at all
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:14 PM - Kenny: sloppy tonight
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:15 PM - Kenny: The passing
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:16 PM - Gotham Gator: I hope we don’t rue those missed chances.
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:17 PM - Gotham Gator: What the hell Grey???? (Bad cross)
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:21 PM - Gotham Gator: Last 10-15 mins have been fairly even.
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:22 PM - gbservis: Stl spending a lot of time chasing the ball, hopefully they start to wear down
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:31 PM - Kenny: I figured when we all predicted comfortable wins in the pickem thread we could be in for some trouble
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:36 PM - Gotham Gator: Interesting shooting stats via FotMob.
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:38 PM - Gotham Gator: xG: 0.57 - 0.36
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:38 PM - Gotham Gator: xGOT: 0.13 - 1.09
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:46 PM - Gene: gollllll
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:46 PM - Gene: Wolf!
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:48 PM - Kenny: My reverse jinx worked
Apr 4, 2026 at 8:48 PM - gbservis: Very clean from Wolf
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:06 PM - Gene: It's okay to get selfish every now and then, boys!
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:15 PM - Marito: Lowe's should sue for such crappy best assist segments
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:15 PM - gbservis: Martins channeling Chanot
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:20 PM - Kenny: This is not super comfortable
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:31 PM - Gene: fuck me
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:33 PM - Kenny: Totally deserved. We fucked around and found out
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:34 PM - yogicen: Oops, what happened?
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:35 PM - Kenny: Everything else falling our way in the conference and we blew it
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:36 PM - Alex Da Silva: Ugh feels like a loss, so many chances for the 2nd. Almost like not having a true striker on the field reduces our ability to score
Apr 4, 2026 at 9:44 PM - LionNYC: Missed opportunity to make it 1st in the east how results are going. Battle of the keepers tonight. Nico walked right off the field

Sat down in Pitchside last night. Saw LionNYC in the lounge but he was with someone so didn’t say hi. Shrimp was very good, as was the pasta. Thought the beer was a little warm and the sliders were not edible. Popcorn was flavorless. Candy wall better than Yankee Stadium.

Martins had a really good night aside from injury time. Freese is just so controlling and saved our butts. Feel for Maxi. Don’t feel like he’s getting the pressing support. Or maybe we shouldn’t be pressing. Think Keaton has had a good year so far. Nico immensely talented but man, he’s not a center forward. The loss of Martinez and bringing back Magno. not good. I didn’t understand the Tayvon sub. He was excellent last night.

We should have scored 5 goals last night. We couldn’t finish. Team won’t go far without moving Nico out of the 9.

The “loss” is on our front office. Our formation is sub optimal and we are forced to ride our starters to exhaustion with a bunch of empty seats and square pegs on the bench. We didn’t improve our 11 and we didn’t improve our depth. Both showed last night.

Sure did feel like a loss. Agreed on all other points.

Still feel like taking Gray and O’Neil off while holding a lead is a vindictive sub pattern aimed at FO.

I thought we looked excellent in the first half. Fluid, quick, recovered balls quickly. Just couldn’t finish. I looked at the possession info around 36’ and it was 58-42 us but it felt more like 70-30.

I moved around behind the attacking goal at about 65’ but my Yankee Stadium trick didn’t work at Citi.

Def felt like a loss at the end and I’m dissatisfied with the lack of a striker but we are at least fun to watch most of the time. The goal was pretty. I wish this team would attack straight down the middle like that more often. We have the talent for it.

We can complain about taking our foot off the gas and too much extra time, it both Raul and Freese should have done better on that goal.

This result is squarely on Todd Dunivant. Look at our matches this season, draw on the road against less than 1 point per game LA Galaxy. Win at worst place Philadelphia. Win against dreadful Orlando. Good win at home vs. Colorado. Crazy loss at home against betting leader Miami. Draw against less than 1 point per game St. Louis. We're not built enough to win and contend for the shield and thus MLS Cup.

As good as he is, Nico can't do everything himself even though he tried, shooting from midfield and then 1 v 3. We need a striker. We need more depth in midfield who don't both play for the Australian national team.

Some notes on how our goal totals to date.

2 of our 6 games gave been against teams in the top 8 for goals allowed, including Orlando which has allowed 5 or more goals 3 times including us. We also have played 3 games against teams currently tied for spots 10-15 most GA, meaning 5 of our 6 games have been against teams in the bottom half of league defense. We have not faced a single top 10 defense in a 30 team league.

Our biggest scorer is Nico with 5, then Wolf, Ojeda and Parks, each with 2. Pro rate those to 34 games and Nico would score 28-29, and the other 3 11-12.
Nico's career high is 6. Wolf's is 11, Ojeda's is 3, and Keaton's is 4.

I think Nico is probably one of those players for whom MLS is a cheat code. I expect him to score a lot, but for reference there have been only 3 seasons in MLS of 28 or more goals in the last 10 years and they came from Messi, Josef, and Vela.

It's not unreasonable to expect one of Nico, Ojeda, Wolf or Keaton to hit those projections. Two is less likely but not crazy. But I think 3 is getting into Lotto territory and 4 even more so.

Just another way of saying we need more goal contributors.

On the other side, 7 GA in 6 games is pretty good, but we've played 3 of the lowest scoring teams in MLS in 6 games.

Only gonna say good things about last night. Joined the third rail and got a scarf, pin, and some stickers. Seems like a fun group! And boy oh boy Kevin’s got some new hair! Looking good!!

Citi Field Food discount question.

Last night my server told me I can stack the 10% for a Citi card on top of the 10% season ticket card discount. Is it true? Has it always been so?
I don't want to doubt him but he then also told me he gave me an extra $5 off because I "seem pretty chill." And without getting a receipt I really have no idea what prices I'm getting.

I'm not saying I'm not chill, but I also know servers will say anything for a tip. Last game at Yankee Stadium the young woman told me she liked "my fit." Which to be fair, my black hat with orange NYCFC logo played nicely off my orange NYCFC hoodie. But still.

Anyway, my question again is can you in fact stack the CitiCard and STH discounts or am I being played?
