MLS - August 23 - Cincinnati (Away)

A lot of that is Evander. He's overperforming his xG by like 10. Crooks on the radio broadcast mentioned that he has 9 goals from outside the box. Evander is really good on the ball but scoring at that rate from distance is not sustainable. He's eventually going to regress like Druissi did a couple years ago.
Makes sense. The part Evander can’t account for is having 8 more wins than losses on just +7 GD. That’s uncommon efficiency/luck in 1 goal games. 13-4 by my count and NYC were 2 of the 4.

Did anyone else notice late in the game, after he subbed on, how often Fernandez was looking to the sideline for defensive instructions? It was clear someone was constantly telling him where he was supposed to be. How are we two years in and he still needs micromanagement on basic positioning? At what point do we just admit it isn’t working and move on?

A year ago, on the road against the #1 team in the East, Cushing would’ve had us in one of his full-on clenched setups, grinding for a 0–0 from the opening whistle. Jansen is a breath of fresh air. Hopefully, he sticks around for the long haul and becomes the first true long-term coach this club has had.
I went to the game in Cincinnati a year or two ago where NYCFC meekly showed up and got pumped 3-0 - the game was over like 20 minutes in.

Cushing set them up clenched and then, after the game was over and Cincy gave NYCFC the ball which led to a bunch of half “chances” for NYCFC, Cushing after the game said his usual “we had our chances and I liked the way we played”.

Looking forward to what a real coach does with this team the rest of the way.

Anyone know the xG on the miss by Alonso in the 79'? Love the guy, and his goal was fantastic. But that miss was extraordinary (and Tayvon deserved an assist from that). I'm just glad it was Alonso. Had that been Fernandez or Ojeda (or back to Bakrar), 50% of this match debrief would have been about that miss.

If I had to one-touch a ball from that spot over the crossbar on purpose, I'm not sure I could do it in several tries.
But surprisingly, Opta rates it as just a 52% scoring chance. I think the difficulty comes from running full speed with a defender tracking him with full contact and the need to one touch the shot.
The all time standard for worst miss in NYCFC hisory remains Talles against Miami at 96%.
