MLS Cup Playoffs - November 23 - Philadelphia (Away)

With a great victory in Philadelphia (goal by Maxi Moralez), NYCFC qualifies for the Eastern Conference Final against Messi's Inter Miami!!! Note that the starting lineup included three players born in NYC: Gray (Bronx), Haak (Brooklyn), and the very young and promising Shore (Manhattan)!!!

Just want to give a shout out to Johnny Shore. He matched up against 'the best double pivot in MLS' and was expected to be overrun but totally held his own. No major mistakes, excellent positioning and solid contributions both ways in a critical high stakes matchup. Quietly fantastic showing by the 18 year old.

Jansen joins club coaching legends Ronny Deila and Nick Cushing in reaching the Eastern Conference Finals. Both Cushing and Jansen won the Conference Semifinal without the team's leading scorer available. Deila won the Conference Final without his leading scorer. Cushing could not manage that (to be fair he also had to win playoff Round One without his leading scorer). Can Pascal do it 2 more games?

Deila was without Parks and Tinnerholm for the entire playoffs and Taty missed the Conference Final under suspension.
Cushing had no Taty, no Morales and no Grey, plus Magno was only available for 30 minutes in the playoffs.
Jansen again has no Parks. Perea has been unavailable since injury in Game 3 against Charlotte. Martinez played the entire first round but injured before the Conference Semi and will miss remainder. O'Neill suspended for Semi but due back for Conference Final.

Couldn't agree more. Bright future with him and Carrizo in midfield, for as long as they are with us. And Reid up top.

THAT. WAS. AMAZING.

So proud of this team. That was immense. Incredible defensive performance, and of course The Little Genius with the goal. Spectacular, spectacular game. Heroic performance. I can not believe this team is in the conference final after the year we had.

That save in the 74th by Freese was incredible.

Pascal Jansen is a gosh-darned genius.

This team has, to borrow a phrase, balls as big as the building.

This was my first time I've ever done an away game with the Third Rail -- if you've never done it, they are a blast. First of all the communication and details are spot-on, but the entire experience was flawless.

I don't know if the sound just doesn't travel in that stadium, but I couldn't believe how quiet the rest of the stadium was. We were rocking that corner, but I couldn't even hear the Philly supporters and they were right next to us. I don't know if it came across on TV, but it was loud in the away end.

Also, I don't know who decided to start singing the Philly goal song with a minute left in the game, but that was hilarious.

VAMOS.

That’s when I knew we were going to win last night. The last 2 or 3 minutes of the broadcast all you could hear was “ Come on New York!” It was loud and crystal clear.

I gave myself the night to feel pure joy and hubris.

Still feeling the joy. Still feeling that our team pulled together in phenomenal fashion - all that has already been said - performances by Nico, Shore, our defense, Ojeda, everyone.

Now, with a bit cooler head, recognizing just how much this match was also about Philly failing. Yes, Freese was fantastic against the shots on goal. But the really good chances Philly had that they failed to put on frame. Woof.

Philly - 2.5 xG. 0 G.
NYCFC - 1.0 xG. 1 G.

Opta has the xG at bit less extreme 2.04 to 1.01. I trust it more than the MLS numbers. Opta and ASA differ, but the differences seem to balance out. When MLS differs it almost always skews higher. Still, you're right. FotMob (which uses Opta data I think) has Philly's as shot xG at 1.39. NYC's is right on point at 1.01. Union had 4 shots blocked and 9 off target out of 18. Four of the spots from which they missed shots are wild.

Game state:
xG to and including Maxi's goal:
NYC 0.84, PHI 0.03
After
NYC 0.17, PHI 2.01

My first grader woke up this morning, asked me who won, and upon hearing the good news, went upstairs and put on his hand-me-down NYCFC 2021 MLS cup champions shirt he got from his older brother. He then headed to his elementary school in...........the suburbs of Philadelphia. He has no idea how hard he's trolling right now.

I was already over the Moon about the way we played last night, but to hear our away supporters showed out so well makes it doubly good.

Glad you had such a great time, ZYanksRule. Jealous. 😁 Vamos Celestes!

To piggy back off the supporters comments - I actually didn't really hear it in the broadcast until the 90+4'ish moment and i was so nervous, but hearing our supporters like that really brought me out of the anxiety and into "we're going to do this". it was grand.

Pascal wasn't brought up much (outside of this forum) in Manager of the Year discussions. He definitely would be in the discussion if it were still to be awarded.

I'm definitely not saying one game should determine an award like that, but I do think the playoff spotlight has brought attention to just how well Pascal has managed this roster.

It kind of supports my long standing idea of doing a televised awards banquet in the days leading up to MLS Cup.
