MLS - May 17 - Red Bulls (CF)

Alonso
Wolf Maxi Fernandez
Perea O'Neill
Risa Martins Haak Gray
Freese

I don't know. This is probably our most flexible lineup at least. Leaving plenty of options for complex in-game adjustments if we assume guys like Maxi and Perea can't go 90. Maybe O'Neill or Perea sits for Shore, with the odd man out relieving the other or Maxi. Ilenic can also come off the bench for any of the central mid players, push Risa in the middle and Haak up to the mid.

Tough choices, but I think Pascal is going to want to set himself up with options considering the congested schedule, Maxi's age, O'Neill's limited time with the team, Perea still getting into match shape etc.

That's probably what we'll see unless Pascal decides to start Ojeda and Wolf is on the right for Juli.

re: today's game

Good win. Definitely was not optimistic going into this one but happy the boys had the legs and determination to get it done. We were definitely gifted the 2nd goal, but the 1st was the result of good pressing, quick passing, and a solid finish.

we are still missing lots of pieces, but i'm glad to see that even this roster can pull out a solid performance.

sad to see perea get another injury. hopefully it is minor and he makes a quick return.

as they say, onto the next. let's get a win streak going!

Great result. Love to see both of our goals come off Red Bulls mistakes. Enjoyed Pascal's pragmatism today, too. Red Bulls thrive on giving up possession, so we gave it to them instead. Their players aren't talented enough to have the ball 60% of the time, and the Red Bulls generated basically nothing with all that possession.

From a macro perspective, we had over 30,000 fans come out to Citi Field at, basically, the same time as a Subway Series baseball game and the night after a huge Knicks playoff game. We are going to absolutely take off from a ticketing standpoint when our stadium opens across the street. The demand is there.

Great game plan, and everyone was on the front foot, looking to take it to 'em. That's where we need to be.

Julian Fernandez turned in his best shift ever today. Aiden is a real pro (can't wait to see him paired with Keaton). Birk Risa gave a very good account of himself at left back. That's one guy who hasn't been able to earn a full-time position up to now, a new guy, and a guy playing out of position, all of whom made a positive contribution.

But what was really impressive was our intensity. We weren't getting pushed around today. We came to play.

I think we saw the impact of losing the playoff game last year -- these guys wanted some payback, and while a regular-season game is never payback for having your season ended, it's a nice way to get some intensity into the performance.

Our guys were ferocious. I thought Risa, Wolf and O’Neill were terrific. It’s great that the new guy got a taste of high intensity both on the field and in the crowd.

We definitely gave off a "Tigres in Leagues Cup" vibe today. And it's worth noting, that match was almost dead even statistically, but anyone who watched it with an objective eye knows we kicked their asses.

Same thing today. If you just looked at the stat sheet and at the FotMob momentum graph without seeing the match, you would have thought we got lucky and Red Bull short-circuited. But that wasn't the case. We were winning fights all over the place.

And damn that feels good.

Exactly. It was a beatdown today. I don’t think they had a shot on target until the second half.

Our defense was spectacular. I’ve been negative about Martins this season, but credit where credit is due; he was terrific. I understand why Martinez was POTM, but for me, it goes to Martins.

Listened to this on the way home. A Perfect Day indeed. Terrific atmosphere, great weather, 30,000 plus, and a derby win.

Today showed what soccer can be in this city and with this club when everything aligns.
