He definitely wasn’t the primary problem, but he definitely wasn’t a fixer. The next one better be capable of working magic with flawed roster construction and mixed motive signings. At least it will keep things interesting during the off season.
I don't think they've had a solid transition plan ready since they fired Kreis and hired Vieira. It would be nice if this is different.Hope they have a solid plan for a replacement.
I saw Soup's post and also agree.I'm also very surprised.
On X, SoupInNYC said he didn't think Nick was the problem that many claimed, but that Cushing also seemed not to offer many solutions, and I think that sums it up.
I mostly hated that Nick - by his own admission - sold out our defense this year (most goals allowed since 2016) to goose the offense. Which goes against the conventional take that he played too conservatively.
Either way, this is a band aid. The roster needs fixing.

ETA: just saw that JayH had the same take as SoupInNYC and posted while I was typing.
Same here. I totally did not see this coming.I just saw the insta post "Thank you Nick Cushing" and I jumped in my seat. "Holy F***" Was the phrase I repeated. I won't say whether in a good or bad way, but wow.
I’m not technically savy to pull out the one quote I want to from this but it’s the perfect description of Nick. He wasn’t the problem but he wasn’t the solution.I'm also very surprised.

Yes. But though they did not control the decision or timing, when Vieira and Deila left they had plenty of advance notice and seemed unready. Dome was not announced right away and making Nick an interim was a weak move. They must have been planning this for some time, so hopefully they've been doing the work on a replacement too.

Beat me by two minutes! LolI will say the best thing about Nick was the fact that we went 2.5 seasons without ever wondering if he was gonna jump ship, a difference from the previous few managers. (ignoring the Arsenal stuff VERY recently.)
Also, that made me realize - maybe this was expected / mutual, and so the Arsenal Women interest is strongly correlated?
I hear you. I just type.I’m just proud of myself for finally changing my Avatar
Nailed it. This is what I've been trying to put my finger on.They played more like a bunch of individuals than a team. Felt more like a national team than a club team at times.
As I was reflecting further this morning, this is the point that I reflected on the most. Too many guys came in and didn't work out - or were good players pre-Cushing and then clashed with him and left or were forced out.Overall I’m going to give him a B- grade leading our squad:
- he was a steady hand that held the course during a transition
- he did take a flawed squad into the playoffs and an upset (I’m a Mets fan and equate it to Bobby V taking an outfield of Payton, Perez and Agbayani to the WS)
- there was development seen from some of the younger American players
- he struggled to connect with some players and rather than develop them he drove them out
- he played to keep him job which may have set us back a season (can’t blame him however it still sucks)
LOL wait someone noticed I've been doing manager joke profile pics?I’m not sure how to say it any other way, but I always felt like this team did not play like a team. They played more like a bunch of individuals than a team. Felt more like a national team than a club team at times. And I think that can for the most part be put on Cushing. I’m going to guess Medhi and Rob stay put. But who knows if another manager will want to use their own people. I don’t think he’s ready for the big leagues but I hope medhi finds him a head coaching job in our organization as either the head of the 2s or in the academy so in a few years he could take the reigns after Pep leaves us (lol).
But MOST importantly, I’m excited to see a new Shwafta profile pic!
I always put that down to him being a company man and doing the dirty work for the F/O. I may have been wrong about that.As I was reflecting further this morning, this is the point that I reflected on the most. I just don't see how you remove Cushing and not Lee.
The Cushing and Lee era.If CFG is giving Lee autonomy to build a competitive roster, there is no justification for him to stay. Lee sticking around tells me that he's not here to pick the high-dollar players; he's here to be the yes man who accepts the prospects CFG picks to send our way.
