NYCFC v Cosmos

So by winning this worthless tournament, we can earn the pleasure of qualifying for a second worthless tournament next season!
I want to compete for MLS Cup next season.
By Winning the US Open Cup, and subsequently qualifying for the CCL, the team would receive additional Allocation Money from the league to bolster the roster. That is the absolute most important part of winning the hardware.

I would rather finish 6th and make a deep Cup run than finish 4th and lose again.

As we saw last year (and with other teams), the key with MLS is to get in the playoffs. Get in the playoffs and anything can happen. No difference between 6th and 3rd other than who hosts the play-in game.

this is true.....maybe even in other playoff sports ( thats how NY Giants made it to the superbowl and beat the "perfect" patriots :D)

Worthless? Are you serious?
- First, it's a trophy. A trophy that every MLS team and every soccer playing team in the US would like to have their name on.
- Second, it's a bid to the CCL, which is an exciting tournament for teams participating in it.
- Third, winning the CCL qualities us for the FIFA Club World Cup where we would get a minimum of $500,000. We'd already be placed in the quarterfinals and if we beat the winning of the Asia Football Confederation, that's a minimum fourth place finish which would be a $2 million and having the opportunity to play against the winner of the UEFA Champions league.

That sounds pretty damn great for us.

As much as I agree with everything you say and think this would be amazing, this club can't beat a lot of MLS clubs so winning the CCL sounds ridiculously hard. And as much as I would love to see us play the winner of the UEFA champions league, I really don't like the idea of watching Saunders flopping around like a fish out of water in front of goal against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo... Losing 20-0 wouldn't be the greatest. And most of that has to do with MLS roster rules. So as much as I really enjoy and relish in the same enthusiasm as you do... There needs to be a little bit of reality.

If anything it's another opportunity to play NYRB this season.

But after redbulls wedding, is that something we REALLY want? I'm not done with therapy from the last shilacking...

True. I too am pretty shell shocked. Last night's game is still hurting too.

I remember Kreis basically playing a B-team last year against the Cosmos. Felt like he wasn't taking the tournament seriously.

Didn't care win or lose. I hope that's not the case this year.

And we were winning too. Until he decided to give Wingert a homecoming, and they came back to tie the game.

We're only a few moving parts away from being a top quality MLS team. If we won the USOC this season, we wouldn't play in CCL till 2018 and if we won that FCWC by 2019. By that time Frank, Mix, Saunders, Hernandez, Mena, Iraola are all gone and we have cap space for a ton of talent and a new DP + TAM DP. We'd also have additional GAM from winning the USOC. We also can bring in some man city youth players (especially if we're playing in high level cups to help them gain experience in those). Can we all admit CFG made some mistakes building this team? But what's nice is they are correctable over a few short years with some smart signings.

Point being, we're not really good enough to win the USOC this season, but we do have talent and can get lucky over 4 matches if we stack our lineup to do so. And we have a much better chance at that then an MLS cup title (since other teams won't be stacking their lineups). Then in 2 years we could have a pretty good team to compete in CCL as a result of the USOC win this year. And if that good team can win the CCL, we could have an even more stacked team for FCWC (not good enough to beat European champion, but good enough not to be embarrassed).

Maybe Garber would realize if we qualify for the FCWC that if we face the UEFA Champion we'll get butt fucked so he and the rest of the owners will open up the roster rules so we can stack our team. KUN AGUERO to NYCFC for one month.

That would be quite the loan if the UEFA champs happened to also be MCFC.... And since we know that'll never happen, carry on...

Begs the question if it were NYCFC vs. MCFC and say we were up 2-0 at halftime, would there be a call from Abu Dhabi?

Don't think it matters as long as the Sheikh gets to keep the trophy on his mantle.

I am perfectly ok playing a B-team against the Cosmos. They are a NASL team and their quality is below us.

Kreis played a b-team but also put in a f-level coach effort. He started Chris Wingert because it was his birthday. He played pablo alvarez who had no business being on the team other then to hold villa's drink. He took out poku after poku was SMASHING THE FUCK out of the cosmos. Our PK lineup was Wingert, Grabavoy, Ballouchy, Mix, Mullins, Facey.

I am totally ok not playing Villa, Pirlo, Saunders.

Front line: Harrison, Mullins and Mendoza/Shelton/Tony Taylor.
Midfield: Ballouchy, Lopez, Poku
Backline: Martinez, Mena, White, Iraola/Allen
GK: Eirik

Subs: Allen, Hernandez, Saunders, Villa, Lampard, Wing, Wing

Only thing I am not sure of is the backline. If Mena doesn't play, he probably will never play. I could see White playing RB and one of Brilant or Hernandez starting at CB. Wild card is a Shannon Gomez start at RB. I can also see Lampard getting a start but he can fuck off.

Worst thing the team can do is be over-confident and overlook the Kosmos by starting all subs. We saw how that went in preseason toward the end when we started the B-guys and it wasn't pretty.

The Kosmos look at the cup like their super bowl because it's the only way they could get into the CCL, so they'll obviously be playing their starters - whereas other MLS teams may not depending on their week's schedule and where they are in the standings. We have a better shot at getting an MLS B-weakened side in later rounds than this one.

I hope the guys take the game seriously and play the starters - immediately sub three out at 60, if we have a 3 goal lead, so they can be fresher for Philly.

First game in two weeks, next game is three days later.

They should start our starters. Call it a warm up game, whatever. Give em a chance to shake the cobwebs off so that we can get 3 desperately needed points against Philly.

We need a Dislike button for posts like this.

I was at the Cosmos v Strikers match tonight.

It was good soccer. Good ball movement and solid first touches. Every goal scored was exciting.

Most of the lineup has started multiple games for us this year. Our deep bench is an assest not liability for us this year. Thia is not like last year.
