Nycfc V Montreal Motm & Post-game

To try to find something that hasn't already been covered, what has to happen before we see one of our other keepers start? The consensus around here seems to be that Saunders is regressing to his mean, so how much leash does he have? Kreis said early on that Saunders has earned his spot, but as the softer goals start accumulating, when does he look to the bench?

(In case it was in doubt, Saunders has been huge for us, and kept us in a lot of the early games when the team was struggling. As has been discussed, while his shot-stopping has been great most of the year, his distribution is poor and he is not likely a long term solution. I still love the guy and proudly held up the brick wall banner.)

I Believe kris has said that Facey had an injury, which is why he was out. Still no accounting for leaving Mix on the bench though.

Tom, I disagree. Kreis needs to change his system now that he has Pirlo (and Lampard) to fit the skill set of his players. That is what good coaches do. They make winning adjustments during games and between games.
Too bad Kreis is nothing but a shit and terrible coach, all season even before Pirlo and Lampard came he already had a decent squad but with his tactics made us look like a team that didn't belong in the MLS. His decision to play Jacobson with Pirlo instead of Poku/Pirlo or Mix/Pirlo was pathetic and I wasn't impressed and the whole Grabavoy? He spent 60% of the game on the ground and even the ref would laugh at him when he tried to draw a penalty, like come on stop playing players who don't deserve or fight to get on the team. I know Grabavoy hasn't had it easy in his life on and off the field but after a while you lose patience and that's exactly what's happened. When you have proven players on your bench that have put in work and given you results game after game (Mix or Poku) and a defender who's been probably your best defender all season (Facey) than you can't just help but think wtf is this guy doing? Does he even want to be here?

Also pointing out Calle played at RM which is out of position just so he could squeeze Grabavoy in at LM unreal.
I know the team sheet doesn't show it but I only saw calle playing down the right and Grabavoy/Mac on the left.

This is ridiculous. I didnt even notice this. Someone needs to fucking punch Kreis.

A moot point but still something to consider: We attacked toward the supporters during the first half rather than the second, which is always a bad thing for us. But Ned, yeah, fuck that guy.

Would you guys rather see Ned or T-Mac go 90 minutes every single game?

Neither one of them appears to be well liked on here.

Personally, I'd rather see T-Mac. He's been playing well lately. He even found the back of the net these past few games.

On the topic of Saunders' distribution, he went short 80% of the time yesterday, which was very noticeable. I still think Saunders is a good keeper. The goals he's given up this year have been mostly when it's between he and the goalscorer. An advantage the shooter should have 100% of the time. Defense gets him in that situation and makes his stat-line look worse than it is

Seriously? Of course it's t-Mac. Ned is amazingly awful. It's a testimate to him that he's so invisible and inept at his profession.

TMac gives us more on offense and more on defense than Grabavoy. Thats easy. A better question is TMac or Calle in our crowded midfield? I would rather see TMac because he stretches the defense more than Calle (although not when he ran into Villa's way during the rare first half scoring chance yesterday)

I think TMac is kind of admired, here. If for no other reason than he looks like he has no athletic ability, but he has always produced for us. I'm not disagreeing with you. I just haven't seen anyone really get after Tommy.

I was sort of on the fence with Mcnamera earlier in the season, but his interplay with Villa (and now Angelino) seems to have improved and his finishing has been solid in these last two games. Cons are that he goes down/gets pushed off the ball really easily and doesn't seem to offer much defensively - a quality lacking in our midfield in general. Easily ahead of Ballouchy and Grabavoy in my book, and possibly Calle as well.

I'm guessing not a chance this year. Meara doesn't speak Spanish, and he's gone after a couple of handfuls of games. Lurch will most likely never start an MLS game, I don't think. His positioning and understanding of the game exceeds that of Saunders, but there's a reason his nickname is Lurch beyond the physical resemblance.

I never seemed to read positive comments about him whenever he was mentioned before.

However You would know better than I, being more active on the forum, wether or not he was appreciated by fans or not.

After spending a great week, I was looking forward to cappin it off with a great win. Spent the day at a friends cabin, taped to the game and rushed to my tv when I got home. You ever had a string of great things happen to you in succession and you're on a great high, then all of a sudden you see something go "awww FFS" because you just know your buzz is going to get ruined? I saw Nedinho in the starting lineup.

Definitely TMac. Most negative comments came early in the season. He has been generally recognized as getting better as the season has progressed. The knock has been that he doesn't get back on D phenomenally well. But still pretty well liked on these boards of late.

Grabavoy on the other hand. I haven't seen a positive comment about him in months, maybe ever, other than works hard. Even when people mention his high pass completion it's usually in the context of how he never attempts a valuable forward pass.

I think Saunders stays. He is part of the back 5. Consistency matters. He is the devil you know. Great shot stopper. Bad judgement coming out of net. Fine with distribution now that we are playing so much more out of the back.

Don't expect any change there until the off season.

Oh, that was another little-remarked-upon positive from this game - Saunders distribution was much faster than we have seen so far.

From a transcript of the post game interviews:

POST GAME QUOTES:

Jason Kreis

On if Shay Facey's exclusion from the Starting XI was a tactical decision or injury decision...

"That was a decision through injuries. Shay's been struggling a little bit with some adductor strains and just in general some fatigue for a very young player. This is his first year professionally and we've been looking for a little bit of an opportunity to get him a rest. We thought this was a great time to do it because Jason was coming back off suspension and had looked great in training."
