Same Boring Frank Lampard Thread 2.0

It's about time for Frank to come across the pond and compete for a contender. They're out of it.

Man City probably cannot win the league. But they are in a very tight race for the Champions League positions. Third place gets them an automatic spot in the tournament's group stage, while a fourth-place finish would require them to go to a playoff round first.

So every point still counts to them. We can assume, therefore, that they are no more likely to release Lampard early than they would have been if they were still in contention for the title.

Wasn't franks line that he wanted to stay at City because he wanted a crack at another championship? Not that he wanted to stay at City so he could sit the bench as they scrape out a 4th place battle with United, Liverpool, and Southampton?

He's not the type to bail out on a team when a better opportunity arises.

It's not up to him at this point.

Possibly winning a title was certainly his motivation for signing the extension at Man City. But, having signed there, he is not free to leave unless the team releases him.

The difference between making the Champions League or not making it is huge. A Champions League spot is worth about $40 million more than a Europa League spot, or about the combined non-DP salary of 13 MLS teams. So, as long as Champions League qualification is up in the air, Man City are not going to voluntarily do without a player whom they have the contractual right to keep, a player who could conceivably get them the points that would mean many millions of dollars to them.

A player they've benched for the last 3 months. Cut him loose and send him back. They're not using him, and seems like they have no plans on using him.

He had a full. 24 minute's last night !!
He will be knackered by the time he gets to NY at that rate.

At this point it's become a situation we've all been through. (Or maybe just me because I'm stubborn)

Someone tells you not to do something or that it's going to be terrible and you say they're wrong and do it anyway.

They were right, it was a terrible decision and you instantly regret it but you're not going to turn around and say they were right. You just suck it up and push through at this point.

And beyond the money, this year it's starting to look like a Europa spot is a net negative for the negative impact it has on your league season.

I think for teams used to European play it wouldn't have such a negative impact, like Chelsea a few seasons ago. The squads in Europa more often than not are there because they have relatively quaility squads with numbers stretched thin.. And then they don't have the money to improve their squad, rather they go after improving their first 11, or form a team like Everton keeping almost the same first 11.
I don't think City qualifying for Europa over UCL would have an impact on them aside from the money aspect.

He only needs a few minutes to effect a match. He had been on the pitch for only seven minutes when he scored the equaliser against Chelsea back in September.

When he arrives in August, after two full months off, he'll be fresher than anyone else on the team.

It depends on the team and the circumstances. For Fulham, reaching the Europa League final a few years ago will always be one of the highlights of the team's history. For Southampton this year, making the Europa League would be a huge validation. You don't mind the extra matches in those cases.

But, for Man City, making the Europa League would be a tremendous letdown; and the extra matches would be a chore. Even though no one would openly say this, they'd be better off finishing 7th and out of European qualification than in 5th or 6th places and in the Europa League. For Man City, losing out on the approximately $5 million that a Europa League place is worth would not be a very big deal.

Don't forget that Chelsea went into the Europa League by parachuting in from the Champions League, not by virtue of league position. They took it seriously and wound up winning the thing; but qualifying through league position would probably saddle the team with unwanted matches for which they would be unable to get up, a fate similar to the one which I would expect for Man City should they finish 5th or 6th. (Note: the one year that Chelsea finished 6th, a position that would have qualified them only for the Europa League, they won the Champions League and earned a spot in the following year's competition on that basis.)
