The Town Hall was really interesting. Was only maybe 50 people, if even that many. Was at the Etihad Park Experience Center in midtown, conveniently around the corner from a Shake Shack. Several conference rooms, a weird J-shaped entrance to the room where the presentation was, and presumably a pair of every type of seat the stadium will have. The J-shaped room had an almost floor to ceiling video screen that went down the leg of the J and then continued around the corner. Was pretty impressive. The video was maybe a minute-long promo piece, and they kept on “airlocking” small groups of people before they let them into the main room.
And then the first thing you see is the stadium model, which was amazing. There was also a bar, with wine and sodas, and some snack types of hors d’oeuvres, and there were two guys dressed completely in black walking around with small trays of finger foods as well. Was both weird and cool. After about an hour of mingling and oohing and aahing at the model they had the talk, for just under an hour. It was CEO Brad Sims and COO Jennifer O’Sullivan, hosted by Ian Joy (!). You had to submit two questions in advance, and the one of the first ones was one I submitted, although to be fair it could have been asked by several people, but I wanted to know if there was the possibility of tours of the stadium once it was in a safe enough condition for it and they said they were definitely going to plan for something of that nature. Other questions were about fan experience and culture, that sort of thing. Sadly nobody asked about the food though, and I forgot to ask as well. They said construction was on schedule, and depending on how the winter goes the stadium should open on time, although with the schedule change they weren’t sure if they would be ready for the short season or not. TBD. Also, afterwards I asked Jennifer O’Sullivan about a possible women’s team and she said they were definitely interested in that further down the road.
Bottom line is that it was fun. By “town hall” I was expecting 400 people in an auditorium but it was just a bunch of folks in an apartment-sized room. I’m typing this on my iPad and it’s not letting me add photos but I plan on dropping some in later on.
Oh, and one thing Brad Sims mentioned several times is that the seats are right on top of the field, and that they had the upper deck at the maximum angle allowed by MLS so everyone would feel close to the action. But he did caution that fans in the top row should maybe not be partying as hard as possible LOL.
