This obviously can't work -- all of those trains are totally in the way.

What are realistic stadium expansions. 20% of original capacity? Could it be even more?

Really depends upon how the original stadium was constructed and how much room around it there is. You also don't have to be limited to only one expansion. Many of the big college stadiums in the country were fairly small and then added onto several times over the years - adding a second level on one side, then the other, filling in an end zone, etc. That's how you go from 30,000 or so to 95,000.

This has happened a number of times, some planned in advance, some not.

The City of Manchester Stadium, for example, was originally 47,000. They just opened (I think) a third tier at one end for an additional 9,000 and are planning a third tier at the other end (not started yet) that will add another 6,000 more. When it's done the stadium capacity will be around 61,000. Don't know if they planned this in advance but you'd think they would've.

The Jones Beach Theater had 8,200 seats in 1952, then in the '90s they bolted on an upper deck that brought that up to first 11,200 and then a few years later to 15,000. This one was definitely not planned in advance in the late '40s.

Here's another one:

This one's interesting because it's a more likely location and also a much larger stadium (55,000) for comparison. Fits easily.

That's one I was looking at also when the discussion turned to the Iron Triangle a couple of weeks ago. And that's for a full-size Etihad. An Etihad at 50 to 75% that size would fit even better. If they could clear the land between Willets Point Blvd and the Flushing River, I could even see building an NYCS/LIRR spur in that area to bring public transportation just a tad closer.

Anything can be done with a little(!) money and imagination.

The plan for Willets Point would not be to place our new stadium where the auto body shops are located. It would be to place our new stadium in the parking lots next to Shea. We would pay a fee for that, and the fee would be used to subsidize affordable housing in the Willets Point development.

Mind throwing a 40K stadium in there like Stamford Bridge or Anfield?

It's probably not a good idea to compare against Anfield and Stamford Bridge. Both of those stadia are near enough to a century old, and aren't representative of the way stadiums are built anymore. Old stadia tend to be more compact, and were originally built without seats in the corner sections, meaning that their shapes and consequent dimensions aren't really comparative to modern stadia.

The City of Manchester Stadium, for example, was originally 47,000. They just opened (I think) a third tier at one end for an additional 9,000 and are planning a third tier at the other end (not started yet) that will add another 6,000 more. Eh, remember that CoMS was originally built for the Commonwealth Games, and while they always had planned to turn it into a football stadium, it also had to be designed to be able to suit an athletics format too. The original capacity of the stadium was only 38,000, and until it was converted for football there wasn't even a roof over one end of the ground. It's one of those quirks of stadium design - a stadium built to be changed around a fair bit (although not to be expanded upwards, hence the problems with keeping the roof's structural integrity during redevelopment last year), so it's another stadium I don't think it's really sensible to use as a comparison for NYCFC's future stadium, because the design specs of the two stadia would simply be completely different.

someone suggested partnering up with the jets....no, this will be a soccer specific stadium only soccer will be played there...partnering with a football team would mean bad sightlines, seats high up from the field and we will have those horrible football lines painted on the field, not to mention we would see the jets logo all over the place on gamedays (they're not going to switch signs and logos for every game day between sports)

Aw Fuck.

Seriously, we're already dealing with YS BS. Why would we not be master and commander of our own stadium?

I thought the city let that thing with those developers who bloomie worked with on that hotel/shopping/housing development deal expire a little while ago?

there's also the Jets lease agreement at MetLife.

The lease for the new stadium is for 25 years, with options to extend it that could eventually reach 97 years. After the 15th year of the lease, every five years, one of the two teams may opt out of the lease after giving the state 12 months notice. However, if one team leaves for a new stadium, the other team would have to remain for the remainder of the lease.

So the earliest the Jets can leave would be 2025.

The Jets have no reason to leave. What...they're going to build another $1.6 billion stadium next door?

Yes, a *green* one. And perhaps actually in the city as opposed to across the river.
