So they have a new office in New York where they say will

"Populous, a global architecture and design firm, today announced the opening of a new office in New York City to be led by architect Jonathan Mallie. The New York office will focus on a wide range of project types and services including sports and entertainment venues, convention centers, hospitality architecture and interior design. This New York expansion, at 475 Fifth Avenue, is Populous’ fourth expansion in the United States in the past 24 months."

Nets are garbage, but Barclays is a gorgeous arena.

Can someone still explain what this website find means in terms of a stadium though? Are we sure them opening up something here means we are closer to an announcement?

Populous has become a massive firm, and this is NYC where a company such as them pretty much need to be. The connection is really grasping at straws. I would say it's akin to Chase opening a new branch near Yankee Stadium and speculating that it may be related to JPM partnering on the financing for the stadium.
Well if you took that's small portion of the story but there is
1) Yankees increased their credit line to $300m well above their payroll
2) there have been rumours that news was coming out soon
3) we just got a email from NYCFC asking about stadium info
4) the picture used in the email was houstons with the color of the seats changed and was a stadium designed by populous.
5) populous announce a new office in New York saying they will design sports and entertainment arenas... There's not much space or need for those outside of us here.

The office was just an added piece. The big puzzle piece is using Populous renderings in their email that have been edited by both perspective and color (probably need the masters to edit perspective). And then we know Populous already designed the stadiums for both Yankees & CFG. It's not definitive proof, but it's more then grasping at straws.

Not quite. Architecture firms don't just open up new offices for the sake of it - the industry as a whole, and especially in NYC was decimated in 2008 - entire offices just closed up shop during the recession. While the industry has rebounded, it's not at a point where satellite offices are opened just to have a presence in a city in the hope of attracting clients. For Populous to come to NYC, there has to be a massive project taking place that cannot be addressed via their Boston, Pittsburgh, or Knoxville offices, and yet in today's construction world, nearly any project can be designed remotely. Which then begs the question of why: For a new office to open, it's being done for the face-time needed when interacting with the client.

Here's the last potential Easter Egg for the X-file folks that want to believe...... The stadium they use is Houston's and Pier 40 is at the end of Houston Street.

Is building a soccer specific stadium considered a "major" project though?

You're kidding, right? I have no idea what their fee would be to design the stadium, but even if they only get 5% based on the construction costs (est $300M), that's still $15M which is a monster amount of money to take in for a single 3-5 year project. I'd wager the fee could be higher than 5%, closer to 7-8%.

I think it's safe to say it'll be Populous, which is great. Besides MCFC, Melbourne, etc., they also did the redesign for a little stadium called Wembley.

I don't know economics well. I was just contemplating the distinction between the price of the new Yankee Stadium and Barclays Center, compared to our new stadium. :P
