Talles Magno [Forward] [On Loan - Out]

Saw this on another site. I wonder if a more mature Magno might be worth bringing back?

I know it would never happen but I still have a wild theory that Magno could be an amazing box-to-box #8 if he wanted to be. He has excellent passing vision, can carry the ball through traffic, and can put in a decent tackle when he wants to. He used to lose the ball in the attack, get pissed, trackback, and just take it from people. It didn't happen often, but he almost always got the ball back when it did. In the midfield, his strength on the ball would be more of an asset and his lack of high-end pace would be less of an issue.

There were times early on he reminded me of Pogba like this with his control, deliberate stride and vision.

He's so talented and such a great guy. But he's right: he lacks the pace and physicality he needs for MLS. He could conceivably hit the weights and get stronger and maybe even a little faster. So, maybe.

He'd have a tough time dislodging Malachi from the left wing, though. That kid is going to come back and be a factor, mark my words.

For him to say this in an interview is already pretty mature of him. An immature person would blame it on the coach or injuries or something else. But he acknowledges that he wasn't up to the level required to thrive in MLS when he first joined. With strong players around him, he was able to produce, but without them, he wasn't able to dominate a game on his own.

I would welcome back an older, wiser, and more experienced talles if he really wanted to come back some day. probably not as a DP unless he showed that he deserved it. i wish him the best and am curious what the club will end up doing with him. i always enjoyed his flair when he took on defenders.

Not a Talles hater, but we can’t forget he was also quoted saying to a person of the media (fan media but still media) that he believes he’s the best player on the squad and the coach didn’t want to play him so his name wouldn’t show up on the centennial board. Yes I’m glad to hear him speaking about how he had to grow as a player but those comments were from last summer/fall.

true. i do recall seeing that. but maybe being back in brazil has cleared his mind and those comments were made out of anger and frustration. in any case, to say what he said at all, it takes maturity.

His numbers in the Campeonato Paulista are not bad: 5G + 1A in 540 minutes. He's not playing a lot of minutes but he seems to be productive enough when he comes in.
he should be showing out in the Paulista, since a good chunk of those teams are not even first division teams.

So with the Malachi situation as it is, is bringing back Magno an option on the table?
An older, wiser, better prepared Magno might be worth a look imo.
His best football was played on the wing when everybody had to pay attention to Taty and I don't think I'm going out on a limb when I say that could be somewhat repeated with Alsono firmly planted as the guy who's expected to carry the team.

What say you?

He was very good under Deila before falling off the map under Cushing. So yes, I think he might benefit from working with Pascal. I'd bring him back if he wants to return.

People forget, but in 2022 he had 10+ goals and 10+ assists in all comps.

But we had Santi/Maxi feeding him the ball. Would Pascal slot him in the 10 or play him as a false 9 like Cushing tried to do, probably not. But don't know how effective he'd be with the roster as it stands for this club.

We still have Maxi feeding him the ball, and with so much attention on Alonso the way attention was on Taty in 2021-2022, there is kind of a similar roster situation. As thin as we are, our fully-healthy starting XI is very strong and would complement him.

This is one of those times where I think people have those rose colored hindsight glasses on. I keep reading people say that Magno was great early on, but my perception and recollection is very different.
He showed flashes of great Brazilian-esque skill but ultimately had an underwhelming amount of impact, even when we had an offense full of ballers. He looked productive at times, but I don't remember any stretches where "very good" is a fair description.

Maybe the stats say differently, but I simply don't believe he was impressive under Deila and, like almost every other skilled player, regressed under Cushing.

Magno did not dominate games by any means, but he definitely contributed to the attack as the stats show. He was seen as one of the best young players in the league ranking well in the best 23 under 23 list before the #9 experiment and injury. Personally, I really enjoyed watching magno play during that time with taty, maxi, and santi/gabby. Those were fun times.

An older, wiser, and more experienced Magno with Martinez to play off of might work. Without Jones to count on coming back, having wing rotation on the left side isn't a bad thing. That all being said, if we can sell him for big bucks like we did with Santi, then we should make the sale.

Magno is playing well in Brazil and he looks extremely happy in every highlight clip. He gave an interview where he said MLS was faster and more physical than he expected and it was hard for him to play his style. I doubt he has any interest in coming back.

I would take magno back in a heartbeat, even right before left he made an impact when he was played on the wing and that was with an inept attack, even if he doesn't take over games, I am confident he will elevate the attack in some way, unlike most of our winger core. However, would I take him over a dp 10 though? Not if I had any confidence they would be an instant difference maker. Make maxi a sub or put him on the wing dome style

This. Would love to get Magno back, but not at the expense of DP10.

I remember posing the question when the Taty departure was imminent - if we could lock down either Taty or Magno to be a career player at NYCFC, which would you take? It was a legit debate. The question was not laughed off the forum. We definitely rated him (and I chose Magno) at the time. It was only Cushing/#9 that turned Magno from a beast of a player on the rise to a failed signing.

I also think Magno's impact, more so that other wingers, depends on the type of game. He plays sooo slow and holds on to the ball so much that he would drive you crazy on a counter, but to unlock a settled, low-block defense he was one of the best options we had, with his dribbling and combination passing in tight spaces. He almost seemed to wait for the opposing defense to be completely settled to then do his thing, instead of trying to get them backpedaling.
